2013

Have a stylish New Year…

We don’t know about you, but we’d much rather be drinking champagne than fighting crimes of fashion right now, so although it’s not quite New Year’s Eve, we’re preparing to close our case files for the year, and get ready to start afresh in 2014. Of course, we can’t wave goodbye to 2013 without taking a moment to say a quick thank you to all of our readers and sponsors for their support over the past 12 months. You are the people who make this site possible, and as we head into our eighth year (!) of crime-fighting, we know we’re very lucky to have you all behind us. We’ll raise a glass to our readers on December 31st, and…

The Fashion Police’s top posts of 2013

Over the past few days, we’ve been rounding up some of the biggest fashion crimes of the past year, and we have some more of those crimes still to come. As you may know, however, arresting ugly items isn’t our only remit: The Fashion Police also fight crimes of fashion by offering style advice, and identifying the GOOD items amongst all those crimes. Today, we take a look at some of our other work from the year 2013: the posts in this list are a combination of the most popular posts of the year, and our own personal favourites, so if you’re in need of some reading material this holiday season, here are a few posts you might have missed…

ugliest trousers of 2013

The Ugliest Trousers of 2013

Happy Friday, everyone! We hope you had a good Christmas if you were celebrating, and that you’re enjoying the holiday season. Our officers are currently responding to fashion emergencies only, so today we’re continuing our look back at the fashion crimes of 2013, with a roundup of some truly terrible trousers. Trousers account for a large section of the Fashion Police jail, and rather than attempting to sort them into their various categories, we’ve decided simply to lump them all together: ugly pants, united in crimes. Trousers, leggings, shorts, jumpsuits – if it has two legs, basically, and we arrested it in the past year, you’ll find it here. Oh, except for jeans. Jeans have their own section of the…

Happy holidays from The Fashion Police!

Well, Style Squad, it’s once again that time of year when we hang up our handcuffs for a few days and take some time off to celebrate the holiday season. We’ll be back in a few days, but before we go we’d like to take the opportunity to wish all of our readers a very happy holiday, if you’re celebrating. Stay safe, stay stylish, and don’t worry: we’ll be back soon, fighting crimes of fashion and solving style dilemmas! Happy Holidays! The Fashion Police x

The Worst Denim of 2013

Good morning Fashion Police officers! With the Christmas holiday fast approaching, we expect those of you with some time-off booked for this week will be feeling pretty de-mob happy by now: we know we are! Rather than get to work hunting down brand new crimes of fashion, then, we figured we’d leave that until next year, and continue our look back through the 2013 archives instead. Today, it’s the turn of our old friend – and occasional foe – denim. The one fabric we should be able to depend on when we don’t know what else to wear, denim can be a very, very good thing indeed. However, it can also be very, very bad, and those are the times…

Crime of Fashion? Fendi fox mink and rabbit “monster” earmuffs

You know PETA have their work cut out for them when a pair of $1,500 earmuffs made from fox, mink and rabbit fur, and looking like THIS sells out at Net-a-Porter within a few hours, don’t you? We know our remit is style, rather than ethics, and as leather-wearing carnivores, we hesitate to cast too many stones here, but with so many excellent faux-furs on the market these days, we do have to question why brands like Fendi persist in using animal fur to create items like this. To bring the topic back to style, however, we ALSO have to question who, exactly, buys this kind of thing, and whether it’s the LOOK of the item, or the simple…

The Ugliest Dresses of 2013

Each year, as December comes to a close, The Fashion Police like to take a look back through the case files, and round up some of the worst fashion crimes of the year just gone. This year, we’re starting off with a look at the dress section of our jailhouse, so sit back, relax (if you can), and take a look at our gallery of the ugliest dresses of 2013! (Note: These products go right back to the start of the year, and many – if not most – are now out of stock.  We’re pretty sure you’ll be able to live with this knowledge, but just in case you can’t, we’ve indicated where each dress came from on the…

Primark Spring/Summer 2014 Preview

It’s not even Christmas yet, but we’re already looking forward to spring: even more so, now that we’ve seen the Primark SS2014 preview. There is gingham. There are full skirts. There’s… a really odd-looking see-through dress which the Empress will just LOVE, seriously. OK, so we’re not looking forward to that last one, or to some of the orthopaedic-looking sandals that are also part of this collection. We always think the Primark preview offers an interesting insight into what kind of summer trends the high street brands will be picking up on next year, and what people will ACTUALLY be wearing. On that subject, we’re really happy to see there are no adult onesies included in the press materials for…

Spaghetti straps over t-shirts: the 90s revived

We haven’t said much about the 90s-revival that’s been going on in fashion for a while now: mostly because we were hoping that if we ignored it for long enough, it would simply go away. Well, it didn’t go away. And now the stores are full of items of clothing that look like this: Dresses: Miss Selfridge Spagetti-strap dresses over white t-shirts: all you need is a velvet choker and a pair of Doc Martens, and it’ll be like 1995 never ended. GOD. Back then, of course, people wore ACTUAL dresses, over ACTUAL t-shirts, not this “stuck together” nonsense that prevails nowadays. This was all fields then, of course. Onesies were just for babies. Crocs hadn’t been invented. People didn’t…

TFP’s Ultimate Party Dresses Roundup

Today is the last day on which you’ll be able to order something online and have it delivered before Christmas (for many retailers, at least: there are a few who’re offering express delivery later in the week!), so if you’re still looking for party dresses for Christmas day, New Year’s Eve, or anything in between, now’s your last chance! To take some of the hard work out of your search, we’ve rounded up our favourite party dresses from UK high street retailers: we don’t claim to have found something for everyone in this selection, but out of the thirty different dresses on the page, we hope you’ll find something you like. So sit back, take a look, and we hope you…

The Worst Onesies | Adult Onesies and Why We Hate Them

Peguin onesie Despite the best efforts of The Fashion Police, it seems the adult onesies trend continues to thrive. Just a few days ago, in fact, we received a press release informing us that a onesie is “the perfect Christmas gift” for “everyone on your list”, and we wanted to weep at the thought of all of those people excitedly ripping open their gifts on Christmas day, only to discover a giant babygrow shaped like a dinosaur inside. Oh, the humanity! We WANTED to weep. We didn’t, though, because we’re well aware that we stand (more or less) alone on the issue of adult onesies. We’ll continue to fight the good fight against them, but the fact is: most of…

Fashion Crime Friday | Fishnet jeans and other crimes of fashion

Greetings, Fashion Crime Fighters! With just one week left before we start winding down for the holiday season, we’re running out of time to clear the streets of fashion failures before hanging up our hats for the holidays. Let’s get right to business, then, and ask you what on EARTH is going on with these pants: Now, we don’t expect much from Just Cavalli, it’s true. Or many of the high-end designers, actually. We DO expect, however – and think everyone has the right to expect – that when we buy a pair of $300 jeans, our underwear won’t be on show at all times in them: To be fair, that MIGHT not be the model’s underwear we can see…

Dress(es) of the Day | Stripe prom dresses from F&F and Topshop

L-R: F&F, Topshop It’s a double-whammy DOTD for you today as we bring you, not one, but two stripe prom dresses! We discovered the dress on the left of the image first: it’s by Tesco’s F&F line, which we’ve been increasingly impressed with lately. You might remember the “winter” floral scuba dress which cropped up as a DOTD alternative a couple of weeks ago: having now had the opportunity to examine the suspect in person, we can confirm that it’s a lovely dress, and excellent quality for the price, so we have high hopes of this stripe number, too. It’s made from the same scuba fabric, so it should be hard-wearing and crease-free. The design, meanwhile, is one that’s always…

fashion police guide to coats

The Fashion Police’s Quick Guide to Coats (and how to wear them)

With the Northern hemisphere now firmly in the grip of winter (even although it doesn’t officially start for another couple of weeks), chances are your trusty winter coat is seeing a lot of wear right now. Coats and other pieces of outerwear almost become outfits in themselves at this time of year, and although that might make you think it doesn’t matter what you wear under them, think again: the wrong coat, with the wrong outfit, can make you look more like a badly-wrapped parcel than the stylish person we know you are. With that in mind, here’s our quick guide to coats, and how to wear them… What kind of coat to wear with a midi dress/skirt? Midi-length skirts…

APB | 24% off at Dorothy Perkins for 24 hours only

Dorothy Perkins have just extended their 24-for-24 sale event for a further 24 hours. As the name suggests, this was originally supposed to be 24% discount for 24 hours (you see what they did there?) but it’s now set to run until 7.59 GMT  (A very exact time, there) Wednesday 11th December. We’d suggest this should technically make it a “48-for-48” offer, but we’re scared they’d cancel that sneaky little order we just placed if we did that, and we can’t have that now, can we? Speaking of orders: the pink coat arrived on the site yesterday morning and is already sold out in some sizes. The popularity of baby pink coats this season means that everyone is selling them, but…

Style SOS | What to wear with a sequin skirt

Since we published our first round of Christmas party outfit ideas, featuring that fabulous sequin skirt from River Island we’ve been getting a lot of searches for the same question: what to wear with a sequin skirt? What to wear with a sequin skirt Sequin skirts have been big news this season, and while the sparkly fabric makes them an obvious choice for Christmas parties, they’re not always the easiest items in the world to style. By their very nature, sequin skirts are fairly over-the-top, which means it’s very easy to end up looking like a glitter ball if you’re not careful. Obviously the question of what to wear with a sequin skirt will depend very much on the particular skirt…

Stylish Stocking Fillers for Fashion Lovers

Last week we shared our gift guide for fashion lovers, and now it’s time for the smaller stuff.  These items would be suitable as stocking fillers, Secret Santa gifts, or just those little added extras you might throw in to make up a larger present. We’ve kept everything £25 or under, and have tried to provide some gift ideas at various different price points, so here they are: some stylish stocking fillers for women who love fashion! ♥ 1. Tatty Devine glasses necklace, £25 ♥ 2. Cath Kidston spot makeup case, £10 ♥ 3. Accessorize translucent face powder in tin, £5 ♥ 4. Dorothy Perkins flower necklace, £9.80 ♥ 5. The Little Black Dress Book, £9.99 ♥ 6. Oasis bobble…

Fashion Crime Friday | Black Friday Fashion Crimes

Happy Friday, Style Squad! Or “unhappy Friday”, depending on how you feel about these potential crimes of fashion… Style Suspect#1: Chloe’s Stuck-Together-Clothes Crime This was bad enough when we thought it was simply an ugly sweater layered over the top of an almost equally ugly denim dress. Then we realised the sweater was, in fact, STUCK to the dress. And that the entire, terrible combination had an original retail price of £530, recently reduced to £330. (It’s still available in some sizes at that price. The fact that it didn’t sell out immediately gives us a small amount of hope for humanity.) We’re charging it with Stuck-Together-Clothes Crimes, with the additional possibility of  a Daylight Robbery charge. Double the crime,…

Trend Trial | Sheer Stripes

Phillip Lim trousers; Jason Wu skirt and top; Nasty Gal track pants;  Tata Naka stripe skirt; Over the course of The Fashion Police’s history, we’ve (unfortunately) become very used to the sight of completely sheer items of clothing, both on the runway, and in some of our favourite stores. For some reason the fashion world continues with the belief that in order to be “edgy” it’s often necessary to expose large amounts of flesh, and we don’t see that stopping any time soon – if ever. Recently, though, a slightly different twist on this look has come to our attention: we’re talking about sheer stripes. You can see some examples of what we’re talking about above, and while most of…

Ugg boots were the most searched-for “fashion” item on Black Friday

Ugg boots have long been considered a crime of fashion here at TFP HQ, but there are plenty of people out there who disagree with us, as evidenced by the fact that the stumpy sheepskin boots were the most searched-for women’s “fashion” item on black Friday, according to Google. We’re using the word “fashion” in inverted commas here because we refuse to take Ugg boots seriously as “fashion” items. Sure, we can see how they’d come in handy on a cold (but dry: soggy Ugg boots made it on to our own list of winter fashion crimes just last month, remember) winter day: they’d keep your feet warm while you were out walking the dog, say, or doing some other…
