Style Trial: River Island denim cut out stud sleeveless shirt dress

denim dresses
Denim dresses are one of those items which can divide opinion. We know some women who love them, and describe them as wardrobe staples which can never go out of style, but then again, we know OTHER women who think they’re the tackiest thing since Britney’s Vegas wedding, and who wouldn’t be seen dead in one. Indeed, there are those who take the stance that denim should really only ever be used on jeans, which rules out, not just denim dresses, but also denim skirts and jackets. Hardcore!

Speaking of Britney: this River Island denim stud dress looks to us a lot like something she might wear, and for that reason alone, we think it’s probably going to be a lot less controversial than some denim dresses we could have shown you. It’s appearance on the River Island website (as opposed to on, say, some kind of Western-wear website), combined with the fact that it’s already sold out in some sizes, however, is a sign that this dress is possibly going down better with shoppers than we might have imagined, so we’ll put it up On Trial and let you decide.

Is this dress a crime of fashion? What about denim dresses in general? Tell us!

This one is not a nice example of “what else can be made of denim, if it’s not jeans or a jacket”. Shoulders embelished with wouldn’t-call-them-stones? Cut out, but with a collar? And all these seams, that would be ok on a real skater / summer dress, but here they just challenge the “stones” to a duel, that kills both the “stones” and the seams…
IMHO, it’d be merciful to cut this item in 3 parts and sell them separately: I mean, skirt, bust and collar+shoulders.

It’s like a denim bra attached to a corset skirt. Attached to a collar? Studded with plasticky fake gems?? Who thought this would be a good idea!?

On the other hand, some denim dresses aren’t that bad. Just, not this one. Please, no.

I have a denim dress that is simple and modest, and it looks way better than this monster.

I thought it looked ok until I realised those aren’t contrast fabric, but cut outs. And then I saw the back. This is a crime of fashion and should be locked up pronto!

This kind of reminds me of that tragic two-piece outfit Kate Hudson wore to the Oscars in the early 2000s (when she also had her hair in those ghastly ringlets). I don’t think the dress itself is that bad though.

Actually I really like it. I love the cut-outs, both the front and the back ones, while the molded cups (or whatever they are called), not so much, but overall I think it can be a cute dress in the right hands, I don’t find it too over the top. I would like to see it worn though before passing the final judgement, it does have potential to create a trashy look – mostly because of the colour and those cups imo.

Mea Culpa :) The dress has made its appearance on the Asos website, so now I’ve seen it in its full glory (http://www.asos.com/River-Island/River-Island-Denim-Studded-Skater-Dress/Prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=2690846&cid=8799&sh=0&pge=0&pgesize=20&sort=1&clr=Blue); you were right, it does remind me of Britney Spears and I don’t like it after all.
