Fashion “Rules” Revisited: Can you wear navy and black together?

pippa middleton stripe skirt Fashion Rules Revisited: Can you wear navy and black together?

It’s OK, settle down at the back there: we know you don’t think Pippa Middelton‘s fashion sense is ever worth talking about, but it’s OK, this isn’t about Pippa, she’s here purely for the purposes of illustration.

And what is Pippa “Perfect Butt” Middleton here to illustrate, we hear you ask? Why, she’s illustrating the wearing of navy and black. Together. In the same outfit. Once considered to be the severest of fashion crimes (Penalty: social death.), this colour combo is one that pops up all the time these days, to the extent that there are probably kids alive today who have NO IDEA this was once considered a crime, imagine.

Is it, though? Well, Pippa Middelton obviously doesn’t think so, as she heads to work in her navy top and black blazer. But what would Pippa Middelton know? It’s the opinions of our Fashion Jurors we want to hear, so have at it, folks: what do you think of the wearing of navy and black?

  1. I’m not exactly the best example of fashion sense, but I actually wear black and navy together really often. I’ve been wondering why, exactly, it is a fashion crime- could someone explain, please?

  2. Both are fairly neutral colours… I don’t really see why it would be a hugely bad reason not to wear them together at all… It’s pretty non-offensive, and unnoticeable half the time.

  3. I actually like it and occasionally wear it. I like to spice up a black navy combo with a colourfull detail like a green belt (I think that’s another faux pas- green and blue together, isn’t it :) ), or a colorfull brooch.

  4. I have worked a long time at Jean Paul Gaultier and one of his specificity was to marry navy and black! But his navy was quite indigo….

  5. Noo! I hate navy and black together – possibly stemming from a navy school uniform we had to wear with black shoes.

I won’t even wear black and brown together. I can just about tolerate a tan shade with black but still not a fan.

      • Same here. Brown+black->huge not, navy+black->huge yes. Few years ago i hated to combine these two colors but last year i became immune so i bought few navy dresses, skirts, blouses, and t-shirts, witch i wear with matte black blazer, black leader leggings and black shiny rubber or leader boots.

  6. Navy and black are cool, I did that all the time when I still wore black ;-) Key is just to make it look intentional. What does not fly with me here is the skirt… You can pair the skirt with navy, or pair the navy with black. Combined like this, it’s rather… not. Probably because it does not look intentional at all.

  7. I like black and brown, and black and navy too. I don’t think there’s any color that goes badly with black. This is why black clothes are so great IMO.

  8. If the navy is easily told apart from the black, then yes. If it looks like you thought the colors were the same when you got dressed, no. I’ve done navy and black, but I made sure that you could easily tell the difference even in low light.
Black and brown, on the other hand, isn’t an issue for me as I don’t wear brown. It’s for no reason besides I just don’t wear it. Even if I own a great shirt that happens to be brown, it gets pushed to one side for the not quite so great shirt in another color.

  9. I’m glad someone mentioned black and brown. I hate seeing people wearing black leggings (as pants!) with brown boots. But I console myself by saying “at least they aren’t Uggs”.

  10. I don’t mind navy and black together, but I do mind black body and black legs separated by a light color skirt. I don’t know why, but this look disturbs me somehow.

  11. I personally think style “rules” like that don’t really apply anymore – if you wanna wear black and navy together, WEAR black and navy together! Who cares!? I would agree there are certain combos that are harder to pull off and look chic (like navy and black, or brown and black) but I think if you are comfortable with your look than go for it!

  12. Navy & black reminds me of my school uniform, so I really hate it. If I do wear the two colours together, it needs to look as though it was an obvious decision, rather than being too lazy to pick a colour other than black. That said, I never think this when other people match them, it’s just a weird complex I have about my own clothes. I also don’t like black & brown, although I’m warming to black & tan combinations. In both of these situations I would choose grey as a better neutral than black :)

  13. Navy & Black? NO! There are so many other, beautiful, colours to match with each one and look really good so why bother?

  14. I bought a black blazer with navy trim on the sleeves from the Zac Posen collection for target and I get compliments on it all the time. I think it can work!

  15. The top part looks fine, the skirt is horrid with it though, it throws the color balance off way way too much and turns it into a sort naval look..

On topic, why the h e double hockey sticks wouldn’t you be able to wear navy and black? I would think that rule would apply only in case of it being so close to black it looks like “oopsie! I thought I had black slacks and black sweater on, but my trousers are navy.. :( My bad!”

I also do not get the hate for black and brown, it’s all shade dependent, no two hues hate each other so much they can never reconcile their differences, if it looks shit, try a different shade. I have shirts that brown and have black printing on them do they suddenly become unwearable because of that? :P

I dunno, I feel like a lot of “rules” should be left to die, like the rules about matching everything, too matchy looks as bad as all over the place >.< but that's just my opinion. ;3

  16. A very close friend who is designer did a series of black and navy jackets and pants that were beautiful but edgy. She’s of an age, European and has seen it all come and go and come back again and again. Her opinion, that the combination is the chicest of all.
