The Fashion Police have a rule about animal print. Actually, we have a few rules about animal print, but there’s only one we need concern ourselves with here, and it’s this one:

If it’s a colour that isn’t found on the animal, it’s probably a crime of fashion.

Now, as far as we’re aware, there are no purple cheetahs or leopards (although there totally should be), so that would mean that Paula Patton’s Mission Impossible 2 dress is in contravention of the rule, and therefore a Fashion Crime.

All rules were made to be broken, though, (Well, other than ones that are actually the LAW, obviously: stay legal, kids!), and we’re in a good mood today, so we’re going to put this dress up On Trial and let you decide whether it’s innocent or guilty as charged.

What do you think?

  1. not withstanding the print, it’s an ugly dress. It would be ugly, IMO, no matter if it was a print or not. It doesn’t seem to fit her very well either.

  2. I LOVE leopard print, but this dress gives it a bad name. Leopard+ lace is never a good look, even on lingerie, and the fact it’s strapless makes it all the more stripper-tastic. I also completely agree with the colour rule. If it doesn’t occur in nature, there’s probably a good reason why!

  3. Erm, I actually really like it. I hate leopard print usually, but I like purple and LOVE lace so I think it’s what swings it for me. I would never wear it though.

  4. “Yeah, I really like purple, leopard prints and black lace but couldn’t find it anywhere except in the Walmart lingerie department so I bought a couple of nighties and made my prom dress from them. Isn’t it cool?”

  5. Let’s see… skintight? Check. Leopard print? Check. Multitonal colors only a 5 year old could love? Check. Holy crap…
“HEY MOM, I found Peggy Bundy’s prom dress!”

  6. I like it.

At first I didn’t realize it was leopard because the purple and the lace were so striking. Then when I took the time to look at the details, I decided that the way it was put together was actually quite nice.

If she had a huge amount of cleavage showing, or the dress didn’t fit, it wouldn’t have worked. Any unnatural color animal print can look bad if the tailoring isn’t classy enough… But it works on this dress, and it works because she didn’t feel the need to match her makeup to the bright hue. I don’t think that animal prints in non-animal colors are automatically bad. They just have to be treated with care so that you don’t end up looking skanky.

    Thumbs up on this dress.

  7. I really want to hate it because, as you said, unnatural colored animal print is tacky. But goddamn it, girl is WORKING that dress.

  8. She should have kept the exquisite nile green gown from the movie and worn it. After seeing how wonderful she looked in that, this thing is truly criminal. There should be additional penalties for combining animal print and lace. Is anyone else sick of animal print, bead embellishment, or both by now?
