SUSPECT: Dita Von Teese SPOTTED: Opening the New Cointreau Prive Pop-Up Bar in London WEARING: White Tadashi Shoji dress, usual hair and makeup
We almost always give Dita Von Teese the Fashion Police Gold Star for style. Honestly, we probably always will: sorry we’re not sorry about that.
Some of you strongly disagree, though. “She should be edgy!” you cry. “She should be unexpected! She should be worrying about whether her outfit has an ‘interesting twist’ or not! And rather than knowing what she likes and sticking to it, she should be ‘switching it up’ and always taking risks, and until she does, we will call her boring and predictable, so there!”
Today, then, we’ve decided to throw Dita to the lions (that’s you), and put her up on trial. YOU can decide whether the fact that her breasts appear to be at two different heights is worth commenting on. YOU can make the tough call on whether or not this dress is veering uncomfortably close to “builder’s butt” territory. And you can do it starting…. now!
SUSPECT: Kate Beckinsale SPOTTED: 2012 Independent Spirit Award Nominations, Hollywood WEARING: Shortened lace dress by Tadashi Shoji, Brian Atwood shoes
Remember when you were a teenager and you REALLY wanted to wear mini skirts to school, but your mum – or the school – wouldn’t let you? So you’d leave for school in the morning with your hem at the parentally-pre-determined length, but then, as soon as you were out of sight, you’d stop and roll it up at the waistband, so that by the time you arrived at school, you’d look like you were taking part in a game of “dress or top“?
Or was that just us and Kate Beckinsale?
What Kate’s done in the image above, you see, is basically a version of that “schoolgirl roll”. Here’s what the dress looked like on the runway, as a comparison:
So, Kate’s just hiked up the waistband, turning a shapeless shift into a slightly less shapeless mini, with an overhang at the waistband.
Which look do you prefer, though? The runway version or The Kate? Or should both of them be arrested for committing crimes of fashion?
SUSPECT: Uma Thurman SPOTTED: UNICEF Snowflake ball, NYC WEARING: Figure-hugging green “midaxi” length dress with gold strappy sandals.
It’s a midaxi dress, everyone! And, actually, it might just have converted us, because if all midaxi dresses looked like this one, we’d be singing their praises from now until…well, Christmas at least.
We know what WE think of Uma Thurman’s fitted green dress, worn to the UNICEF Snowflake ball last night, but what do YOU think of it, jurors? We know many of our fashion jurors dislike this length, but has it won you over, the way it has us?
Uma wore the dress with a pair of strappy gold sandals which were more “foot” than shoe. How do you rate her look?
Suspect: Sarah Jessica Parker Spotted at: UNICEF Snowflake Ball, NYC Wearing: Louis Vuitton white feathered dress; white pointed Manolo Blahnik pumps
Last night’s UNICEF Snowflake Ball wasn’t a costume party, but SJP looked a bit like a snowflake anyway – albeit a feathery, pointy-toed one. She kept to an “all white on the night” theme, and somehow looks very “wintry”, even although the dress is from the Spring/Summer collection.
What do you think of her look, though? We’re handing the suspect over to you for a verdict…
Jeffery Campbell, Enemy of Feet, is such a serial offender when it comes to crimes of fashion that we decided it was time he had his own little corner of the Fashion Police jail. It’s probably safest to keep him as far away from the other inmates as possible to be honest: they have enough problems as it is without being influenced by items like the Pusher Platform (above). These have a 7″ heel, and are attached to the feet by a simple ankle strap, and… that’s it. So they’re as much an exercise in balance as anything else.
Of course, The Fashion Police outlawed all flatforms some time ago, so these are actually illegal in our little world, not that it’ll stop ol’ JC. At this point, we don’t think ANYTHING would stop JC…
Most amazingly, these are now almost sold out at Nasty Gal. We would really love to see what people would wear with then, and how they’d wear them – we guess they’d come in handy for any event where you’d want to be able to see over everyone else’s head, but other than that, we’re kinda stumped. Any suggestions?
At last night’s UK Fashion Awards, Alexa Chung won the British Fashion Award for the second year in a row. This is the only title which is the result of a public vote, so while the appeal of Alexa has always been a bit of a mystery to us, if we’re totally honest, we are presumably in the minority with that one, and Alexa is a true icon of British style. We’ll allow you to be the judge of that. For ourselves, we will simply say that she looks very nice here (wearing a Christopher Kane dress and Charlotte Olympia ‘Kitty’ heels) and leave it at that.
What do you think of Alexa’s style? A deserving winner of the British Style Award?
Cats and shoes: it’s not exactly the most obvious pairing in the world, but ever since Miu Miu released their cat-print platforms a couple of seasons ago, cutesy animal prints have been all over the place: and it’s not just cats, either – we’ve had Scottie dogs, owls, swallows – you name it, it’s probably graced an item of clothing.
And now we have these ‘Purr’ wedges by ASOS. The print instantly made us think of Miu Miu, although the shape is totally different: the overall effect is a little bit witchy and a big bit twee, but nevertheless, we think these might be one of those “love them or hate them” items, which is why we’ve put them up On Trial.
What do you think? Are they innocent or guilty of committing crimes of fashion?
