Designer Vs High Street: Victoria Beckham Vs Closet

Pictures of Freida Pinto looking gorgeous in a pale pink dress on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week had our officers sratching their heads for a second, and thinking, “Wait… is she wearing… Closet?”

Of course, she wasn’t. Freida was, in fact, wearing a dress from Victoria Beckham’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection, which, like the rest of the Victoria Beckham line, is beautiful, but not exactly realistically priced for those of us who aren’t on celebrity salaries. Most of the dress collection, for instance, retails from £900 – £1,500, with some pieces costing more.

Enter Closet, with their pink asymmetric neck dress, which… look, we’re not going to beat around the bush, here: it’s damn near identical, isn’t it? In fact, we can’t spot a single difference, other than the one on the price tag, which, while we’re on the subject, is £27 down from the original £45 at A|Wear.

So, what do you think, Fashion Jurors? Would you buy Victoria Beckham or Closet? Or would you buy neither?

I’d buy cheap(er). I don’t think I’d even feel bad about it in this particular case. Of course, I kinda like Victoria and it is a rip-off, but then again it isn’t illegal and it’s not like I’m taking from Mother Theresa herself (um, that would be illegal these days I guess…). I can’t imagine a lot of extra things that Victoria would do with her share of what I would have paid for her original dress, but I can imagine a lot of things *I* would do with it :-) So, cheap it is. I actually bought some yellow flats with braiding around them for 15€ this summer and some weeks later saw they are a total knock-off of Manolo Blahnik’s Mastro flats which retail for a smooth $595…

Oh and I also saw a military leather jacket by Boss Orange recently which was on sale for 400€ (down from 800…). Some weeks later, I saw an almost identical knock-off on sale from Promod for 20€ (was 55). Guess which one is now hanging in my closet and which one is not ;-)

I think this is way too simple to be considered a rip-off.

I’ve generally liked Beckham’s dresses so I would certainly be willing to purchase inexpensive versions of them (if there were any being sold in my area, of course).
