Celebrity Style on Trial: Leighton Meester at the premiere of Country Strong

This Marc Jacobs dress has been winning huge amounts of praise this week from our fellow fashion bloggers, some of whom have been gushing over the wonder of it since it appeared on Leighton Meester at the premiere of ‘Country Strong’. This reaction has left us scratching our heads and wondering what we’re missing here, because… well, we don’t even really need to explain ourselves, do we? It’s a see-through skirt with a bad case of measles, and our fingers are just itching to rip it off and reveal what looks to be a reasonably nice dress underneath. Before we go ahead and decide that would be the right thing to do, however, we’re going to take a quick straw poll of our readers. What do you think of this? Is it guilty or innocent of commiting crimes of fashion? (To help you decide, there are some more images under the jump)

  1. How HORRIBLE!
I’m with Jess on wondering about the golden disc!!

    And.. the bare boobs!

OMG she looks like what you can sometimes find on some knitting forums(( (when knitting goes wrong)

    And her hair!

    I just can’t stop looking…

  2. I actually really like the dress. The colors are very nice..the bottom half is see through but it was done in a tasteful manner. On the other hand, the gold dics and the shoes are entirely wrong for this outfit

  3. Red shoes with hot pink? Ick. This dress looks like two very different sarongs paired together to imitate the world’s ugliest sari. And the gold disk is mysterious. How does it stay on? brr and ouch.

  4. Definitely a fashion faux-pas in my book!! Hate the red part of the dress, as well as the gold disk and the clashing shoes. On top of that, her hair looks extremely frizzy and she appears to be very flatchested (which she usually is not, or at least not so bad). Ugh!

  5. The top half is pretty (although I don’t understand that golden disk either…), the bottom half would be great without that awful pink curtain from the 70s that poses as a skirt. The way it is, the “shkirt” clashes with the shoes as well as the top, and I can’t help but feel sorry for the cute golden skirt underneath.

So please, Leighton, tear off the pink part and fix your hair, and I’ll join in the praise.

  6. Is it just me or does it look like the side seam of the skirt is ripped/wonky?

Anyway, lose the gold breast armor plate (really, is she expecting an invasion of some sort?!). As for the pink overlay on the bottom half, I agree that making it the same length as the underskirt would render it cute. The underskirt material appears gold and shiny; don’t want to imagine the black crochet top and shiny gold skirt without the pink overlay to bring it together.

No excuse for the hideous shoe combo.

  7. Looks like someone noticed there was a stain on the origional dress and took up granny’s crocheted table cloth, flung it around her and told her no one would notice!

  8. I agree with the others. Shorten or remove the measle-y part because the length it is is horrible. And who paired those shoes with that outfit? Hot pink and red do not a match make!!

  9. I liked it until I scrolled down and saw that it went all the way down.. now it just looks horrible. And what’s up with that golden… cup? on her breast?

  10. Marc Jacobs or not, I don’t like it. It’s not elegant, not smart, not even funny… And the shoes, they couldn’t have been more… unmatching, color-wise. Sorry.

  11. I don’t really understand the top part, the gold disc is definitely throwing me off. Is the top part see-through? where are her nipples?

  12. Typical for Marc Jacobs…he’s been a repeat offender on this site, mostly with his shoe designs but I guess it was only a matter of time for him to spread around…The top part of this dress is beautiful and it’s not see-through, it has a nude underlay, and it appears that the mysterious gold disk matches the supposedly gold skirt slip. If the pink part goes away it could all make some sense. Then even the shoes won’t be so bad.
