River Island grey laddered cowl neck Style on Trial: Cowl necks for menWhat do you think of cowl neck sweaters for men?  We love a man in a polo neck or a v neck, or even a classic crew neck for that matter.  We weren’t even aware cowl necks for men existed in the real world (undoubtedly Mark from Ugly Betty will have worn one at some point) until we spotted a couple of options whilst browsing the men’s collection at River Island.  The image above is one example.  We can’t think that we have ever seen a man on the street in a cowl neck and we are not sure we like the idea very much.

But what do you think?  Are cowl necks the next big thing in menswear?  Or is this a style that should be reserved for women’s sweaters only?  You decide.  If you (or your man) likes the sweater above it can be purchased here for £34.99.

No, we have no idea why, either. This wasn’t a costume party, as far as we can tell – it was the launch of Paris Hilton’s new fragrance, ‘Tease’ – but Paris apparently decided it was the perfect excuse to get dressed up as her idol, Marilyn Monroe.

We’ve actually had nightmares in which we’re the only ones to turn up to a costume party actually in costume, but as this isn’t too far removed from how Paris dresses anyway, maybe she thought she could get away with it…

We’re not just scared because this nauseatingly hideous Duro Olowu polo cardigan is apparently worth $935 to you, although that’s frightening enough, and if we let ourselves think about it too long, we just bet we won’t be able to sleep tonight.

No, we’re also scared because of the pointy-headed mannequin.

WHAT’S WITH THE POINTY-HEADED MANNEQUIN, BARNEYS?!

Seriously, are you trying to give us all heart-attacks? You can’t destroy the Fashion Police with fear, you know, (Well, you kind of can, to be honest, but we’re not going to tell you that) but we think that by creating this army of Pointy-Headed Mannequins (PHMs), you’re probably planning to try and take over the world. The Mannequins will come, and they will bring their $1000 cardigans to ensure that the Fashion Victims shall inherit the earth. Actually, we’re pretty sure Pointy-Headed Mannequins are one of the four horsemen of the fashion apocalypse, no?

Cute on a four year old? Yes. Possibly even cute on a ten year old. A teenager might just pull this off with enough “innocent chic” aplomb, and worn with a dash of irony I can even see it cropping up in the lecture theatre… But we’re going to stick our necks on the line and say that if you’ve graduated? You most likely can’t pull this one off.

Which is a shame, because you know we’re all about the stripes!
