“Wow,” we though, flicking through the dresses section over at Bergdorf Goodman. “Would you lookit that! This dress looks EXACTLY like a Spanx slip! And God knows, those aren’t exactly cheap either (although, let’s face it, there are less expensive versions around), but hey, at least they’re not $475!”
This Roland Mouret slip - we beg your pardon, underpinning – is, though. Which makes us wonder: why? What is it about THIS slip that makes it worth almost $500? Is it made of magic? Does it turn you into Heidi Klum? What does it do that Spanx doesn’t? Because surely it can’t just be that it has the name “Roland Mouret” stamped on the label? Please someone: tell us that’s not it?
Serious question, then, because we’ve never had the opportunity to wear a 4475 underpinning, so we know nothing about these things: is a designer slip that much better than a regular one? Is it worth spending that much on one? Anyone?
We’ve been asked a few times now what we consider to be winter clothing essentials, and now that the summer stock is all on sale and the winter clothing collections are starting to trickle in, we figured now was a good time to put together our winter wish list.
In doing this, we have to note that we’ve put together this list from the perspective of people who live in a cold climate, with even colder winters: obviously if you live somewhere warmer, your winter wish list will look completely different – please feel free to tell us about it in the comments!
1. A great coat
If we could only purchase one thing for winter, a great (and warm!) coat would be right at the top of our list. The right winter coat is well worth investing in: some days it’ll be the only thing people see you wear, after all, and if you choose well, it’ll last for years. We like to stick to fairly neutral colours, so the coat will work with different colours of shoes and tights, but a bright colour can also be a great way to cheer yourself up in the dark days ahead – and stand out from the crowd. This season, we’re loving classic camel – ideally in cashmere, but any warm fabric will do! (If your climate is particularly cold, and you spend a lot of time outdoors, you may also want to get yourself a puffy, weatherproof jacket of some description too)…
Well, it’s been a long time coming, but this September two more of the stores we’ve wanted to shop online from for years now will finally open online stores.
Zara will open its online store on September 2nd, offering shipping to the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France and Germany.
H&M, meanwhile, will extend its existing online shopping to the UK on September 15th, with subscribers to the company’s newsletter being given access from the 9th (sign up here).
As for those of you in the rest of the world, well, we’re afraid you’ll have to wait a little longer, but hopefully this is a small step towards global shipping for the brands in question!
Of the five stores we begged to open online stores way back in 2007, we’re pleased to note that only Primark continues to lag behind and force us to find a store in order to stop from them. Come on, Primark, whaddya say? Make our online shopping lifes complete?
We normally set up our Fashion Police Checkpoint at the end of the week, but this time we thought we’d surprise you and give you all a bit of a friskin’ smack-dab in the middle of the week instead…
Before you can proceed, then, we’re going to have to ask you to step aside for a moment and give us an inventory of what you’re wearing right this very second: no cheating!
Scarf, meet shirt. Shirt, meet scarf. Readers, draw a huge sigh of relief, because surely, SURELY, we would never have been able to put together this cunning pairing ourselves, without the help of John Rocha?
Sadly, now that the pairing has been made, it can never be UN-made. That scarf and that shirt are together for life now, and what John Rocha has joined together, no man (or woman) shall put asunder. Well, not without some scissors and a bit of patience, and honestly, if you’re willing to invest that much time picking apart a scarf that’s been attached to a t-shirt, we’re sure you could stretch to just throwing a SEPPARATE scarf and t-shirt together in the first place.
If you couldn’t, however, Rochas has handily done it for you, and the combo is currently on sale at Debenhams for £21.25…
