Katy Perry lights up the Met Costume Institute Gala in a glow-in-the-dark dress

Katy Perry Met Costume Institute Gala

We saved the best - or possibly the worst, and we're going to leave that up to you - of the Costume Institute Gala's red carpet offerings until last: Katy Perry in a glow-in-the-dark dress which came complete with LED bulbs for that, um, special "glow".

To see what it looked like BEFORE the lights came on, take a look under the jump...

There used to be this commercial for nasal spray in which people found themselves literally knee-deep in wadded-up tissues. The un-lit version of this preposterous dress somehow reminded me of that commercial. The lit version, oh dear, reminded me of those tacky X-mas decorations of snowbound villages lit by ever-changing LED-lights. Under a mountain of wadded-up tissues. Still, Ms Perry has insured she’ll in every paper and every mag and every blog and I suspect that was pretty much the point anyway.

  • I kinda like the idea as a quirky fun thing, but the lights and dress don’t seem to go very well together at all, if it was done very differently this would be kind of awesome. Shame the dress is so ugly and it looks like very little thought went into it at all.

  • Oh god, it’s awful. My eyes! Why would she swamp herself in that blancmange?

Agreed. Love the concept, hate the execution.

    • i llike the concept too but it would have looked better without the lights and a different color the pink was way too pale

  • It seems to be a mix of a ghost brides wedding dress and something a glow fish would wear. Have to say it is nothing but awful!

  • Looks like its made out of Flumps to me!

  • Love the necklace and the shoes…but who could even notice?!

  • Designers, the gimmick of glowing dresses should better be left alone.

  • I think it’s awesome that she took a chance for this event! So many of the other women there dressed like they were going to the Oscars. They were too scared to take a risk. Katy took a risk and I think it really worked for this occasion.

    • I agree. I mean, why not? Stars seem to dress up so much anyway, maybe she decided she was bored with the usual glamorous or even cute dress. It’s got to be stressful to try to have it perfect all the time. She might as well forget the standards and go for glow-in-the-dark.

      • love it

  • I love it! The cut and fit, not the best, but in this case who cares. It’s original and it’s fun and it’s refreshing to see something like this outside the studio and worn well; she certainly looks like she’s having a blast.

This dress make jump. Even if I read that the dress glows I wasn’t prepared for the sight o it.
Oh well probably not much of my taste but a sure way to make an otherwise boring gala interesting. And clothes stayed on the body all the time so I give it a pass.

  • i like it, the Met costume institute gala is the kind of event where celebrities can wear eccentric clothes and katy perry looks so cute and clean in anything you dress her. this dress is funny and the lighting part drew lots of attention.

  • hummm, this is quirky and fun but I can’t get the appearance of one jellyfish out of my head as this dress really remind me of it…

  • I do not like her style and this dress is no exception. Christ. She must have loved those light-up heels over on Shoeperwoman so much that she JUST HAD TO HAVE THE DRESS VERSION.

  • Wow, I totally love this!
I think it’s a really interesting idea that really works here. It’s really unique without being gimmicky, I like that!
