A few more quick shots from Alternative Fashion Week, to help end your Thursday afternoon with a dollop of latex, and maybe a nipple or two, you never know! OK, when it comes to Alternative Fashion Week, you totally DO know, don’t you? You know there will be nipples and there will be latex. Both are present in this small gallery from the Amstatik show: enjoy, and remember to tell us what you think!
Shoeperwoman alerted us the existence of the flat version of Christian Louboutin’s ‘Love’ pumps back in November, and although we’re not normally keen on clothes and shoes with writing on them, we were fairly taken with the style. This is the heeled version, as worn by a very shiny looking Paris Hilton to the the Project A.L.S. 7th Annual Los Angeles Benefit this week, and we’d say more about them, but we’re too distracted by all those sequins. We’re more used to seeing baggy, sequined tops like this on the, er, more mature lady, shall we say, but Paris is presumably hoping that by pairing the sequined top with a pair of leggings, she can get away with it.
Q. Jean shorts with Converse sneakers – cute or clownish? What about sneakers with casual dresses?
A. We’re not fans of sneakers in general, but that’s just a personal preference, and we can’t see anything wrong with the combination of shorts and sneakers, if that’s your style. We wouldn’t describe it as “cute”, particularly – it’s a fairly basic, functional kind of style – but we wouldn’t instantly think “clown” either!
As for sneakers and casual dresses, again, not a look we’d go for ourselves (we’d rather wear almost any form of footwear than sneakers), but not crime of fashion territory either.
What does everyone else think? Denim shorts with Converse? Sneakers with dresses? Tell us!
We’re always very suspicious when we see the word “hybrid” applied to items of clothing. Most of the time, you see, we just don’t WANT our clothes to be “hybrids”. We either want a jacket or a waistcoat, not something that tries to be both, and ends up being neither, which was the sad fate of this Comme des Garcons… jacoat? Waistket? What would you call something like this, anyway?
With one arm off and one arm on, plus a band to hold it all together, it looks like it’s been subjected to a particularly violent attack, poor thing. Don’t worry, Fashion Police officers are investigating as we write this. If you’d like to offer the item a safe house, where it’ll be safe from further attacks, however, you can buy it for £309 at Far Fetch. We’re sure it’ll be very grateful.
Have you ever been torn between your Mary Janes and your knee boots? Have you ever wished your lace up boots actually had some sort of in-built ventilation system to let the air circulate around your uppers? No? Really?? Neither have we.
But apparently, the lovely people behind Hobbs’ new contemporary range, NW3, have suffered just such issues. And to end their suffering they bring you canvas lace up knee boots – now with added peep-hole!
But for those moments you get an inexplicably itchy foot, we think these particular boots are only good for letting the rain in. Which, British summertime being what it is, The Fashion Police see happening far too often on this side of the pond…
But maybe you can see their potential? Perhaps you hail from sunnier climes? You tell us – are they pretty or pointless?
Alternative Fashion Week kicked off in London this week, and although both the name and some of the images suggest that this is a collection of fashion from alternative cultures, it’s actually just an opportunity for new designers to showcase their talents. Up to 12 designers exhibit in each show, and the images you’ll find in our gallery are a selection from day one. Are these the fashion stars of the future? We’ll leave that one up to you to decide…
Q: At what age are skinny jeans and playsuits a no go?
A. This is a really interesting question, so we thought we’d open it up to our readers as well as answering it ourselves!
While there’s no magic age at which The Fashion Police will come along and revoke your skinny jeans licence (We can think of some 40 year olds who look much better in skinnies than certain 20-year-olds, which makes us think it’s not so much about what you wear as how you wear it), we think the simple answer to this one is that if you’re old enough to feel uncomfortable in a certain item, or like you’re in fancy dress as a teenager, you’re probably too old to wear it. This has nothing to do with how the item looks: it’s simply because clothes have to be worn with confidence – they have to make you feel good in order to look good, and wearing something apologetically never really works. (If you don’t believe us, just look at Kristen Stewart…)
Of course, that doesn’t mean that you can wear anything you like, as long as you feel confident about it, it just means that you might have to think a little more carefully if you want to pull off a “younger” trend. The, um, more mature lady, for instance, would perhaps be better off pairing her skinny jeans with a longline top and tailored blazer, say, than with a crop top and novelty headband, while a plain, dark wash is going to look more sophisticated than ripped acid-wash. (Actually, almost anything will look better than ripped acid wash, but that’s another question altogether…)
As for playsuits, well, that’s a slightly more complex issue, because playsuits tend to stray into the area of dressing like a toddler, and the further away from toddlerhood you are, the stranger that’s going to look. We still don’t think there’s a hard and fast age-based rule here, though: not everyone in a particular age group looks the same as everyone else in that group after all, so if you feel you can pull off the playsuit, we say:
a) Good for you!
and
b) If you’re worried about it being age-appropriate, enlist the help of a friend you can trust, and ask them to tell you honestly what they think.
What do YOU think, though, readers? How old is too old for skinny jeans and playsuits?
