Ask The Fashion Police: Should a 21-year-old wear Heelys?

can adults wear heelys shoes Ask The Fashion Police: Should a 21 year old wear Heelys?

From our Formspring page:

Q. I am 21 years old. What do you think about wearing Heelys shoes (the shoes with wheels on the bottom)? Are they acceptable on a non-work day?

A. We must admit, we were a little puzzled by this one. Why would an adult WANT to wear Heelys, we wondered? If it’s because you think it might be fun to zoom around on wheels, well, they make rollerblades for that, and we bet they’re more fun than a pair of Heelys (although we’ve never actually put this theory to the test), without making you look like you’re dressed as a toddler. If, on the other hand, it’s simply that you like the look of them, again, there are lots of sneakers out there for adults, and they won’t make you look like a toddler either.

Heelys, on the other hand? Will make you look like you’re dressed as a toddler.  If you’re OK with that, then we’re OK with that too: we’re not a REAL police force after all. (And our opinion on Heelys is quite possibly clouded by the number of  times we’ve been almost knocked over by kids wearing the things in the supermarket.)

What do our readers think, though? What would you think if you saw an adult in Heelys? Maybe you wear them yourself? Do share…

  1. If I saw an adult in Heelys, I would give them a high-five and tell them how awesome they are. Yes, I like Heelys. I almost wish I had a pair, but my past encounters with skates haven’t been very good, so I’ll leave them to the more balanced people out there.

    • Me too! (Though a woman whose top with a baby reindeer motif I complimented today looked at me as if I was either mad or mocking her.)

When I see children on Heelys I secretly wish I was wearing them too, though I have noticed some places do ban them so you’d have to carry spare shoes around with you, like when you’re wearing killer heels.

  2. No. Heelys should never have even been invented in the first place. But perhaps I to have been influenced by badly behaved children wheeling around on annoying shoes.

  3. I agree with Amee. But I’m more worried about the kids than upset with them. It is oh-so-easy to hurt yourself with these shoes. Rollerblades and rollerskates have brakes on them. Stopping with these shoes on? Fuggettabaddit!
If I saw anyone over 12 wearing these, I’d assume they were in some way mentally disabled. Harsh, but true.

  4. I don’t like Heelys on anyone. They’re just wrong for adults, and children invariably skate around indoors in them, and their parents pay no attention, forcing me to say things like “Please don’t skate in the store.” No. Roller skates are roller skates, and are fine for skating in appropriate venues. Sneakers are sneakers, and fine for their own list of activities. But never the twain should meet.

  5. I think I’m with Katie! Yes, they’re juvenile looking. But, sometimes in the mall when the 2 stores I want to go to are at opposite ends, I’ve wished for some. Or at a place like disneyland when I’ve been walking most of the day. Hopefully an adult would be a little more aware of the other people than the tots are.

  6. 19 years old here. If I saw someone over the age of 10 wearing heelys I would think they are mentally challanged. Those thing are big and chunky and you cant even work out in them to make up for the ugliness.

  7. No. Just no. At twentyone youre too old to get away with these heinous things… even at age ten youre too old. Besides what happens one day when you inevitably wear them out to the bar with your friends? wheeling home wont be so fun

  8. and whatever for?i find it annoying when kids skating not in a proper place, and i would loath adults who do that. cept you’re going to a skate park and too lazy to bring a real pair of rollerskates, i strongly suggest to forget about it and if you really need something to remind you of your childhood, id recommend tamagotchi.

  9. I’m thinking of getting Heelys and I’m 18.
Honestly don’t let these boring, dismally, bitter people put you down.
The point of life is to have fun. Live it how you see fit. Ignore the negativity. It’s usually brought upon through either jealousy or insecurity.
