We've pretty much established by now that Rihanna dances to the beat of her own drum when it comes to her sartorial choices, so today we want to ask you about one particular aspect of her most recent red carpet outfit, namely this "ankle socks and stilettos" look, which she wore to the Nickelodeon's 23rd Annual Kid's Choice Awards this week.
This look isn't unique to Rihanna, of course (although she's put her own spin on it here by mixing her metallics, with silver socks and gold shoes): its something we see pop up fairly often in fashion editorials, on street style blogs, and possibly in real life too, although admittedly this isn't something we've ever seen in the vicinity of the Fashion Police HQ.
What do you think of it, though? Should ankle socks and stilettos only be thrown together on the bodies of the very young, and very confident (like Rihanna, for instance)? Should they be thrown together AT ALL? Are they something you'd wear? i wear socks with heels a lot and i love ittt. Makes heels much more comfy, and i think it looks really cute. Changes up an outfit a bit, doesn’t it??
Socks should only ever be worn with heels when they’re also worn with pants. Said socks should also NEVER be ankle socks. Yuck.

I also think it’s cute, but probably really more for young women and not for, say, my grandma (well okay, she doesn’t wear heels).
What do you think of peep-toe stilettos with socks?
I really can’t decide about that. Sometimes it looks quite cool, e.g. with simple black peep toes and neon socks (or some with hearts on it..okay, I’m getting carried away here, maybe..) and sometimes it looks like you’re a tourist

I love this outfit. I certainly wouldn’t wear it, but she pulls it off. Not a look for everyone though…

It looks good on her, at the moment. I think there is poetic license here–I wouldn’t wear but I am not a singer of a rock/movie star. Plus I think I am a little too old for that
I think that she worked this outfit well. She looks good and confident, and really the socks shoes and socks didn’t look that bad with the outfit she wore. Good for her for being daring.
it’s very 80′s of her….i remember madonna, Bangles etc rocking this look way back but then the ankle socks were folded over and had a lace edge…….. fast-forward to 2010 i doubt it’s my style….maybe for the younger lot (16-18 yr olds)
not a fan of socks n stillettos or socks n sandals…IMO the former looks a wee tad trashy and the latter looks a wee tad sloppy
i can see how socks n stillettos might look edgy to those who didnt see it in the 80s…so i’m gussing the subset who’d agree with me are those who saw this look before…in person i mean…not “glamorous retro photos” lol
I think she’s rocking it. However, it’s something only a very small portion of society could pull off, or indeed would even be brave enough to attempt. Although Ugly Betty doesn’t seem to make too much of a tragedy of it…

I think that Rihanna can do whatever the heck she wants because she’s awesome. However, normal people should probably stay away from this look.
I agree wholeheartedly with Sandy. While I would never do this, Rihanna rocks pretty much everything she wears, and this really suits her since I generally see a lot of ’80s inspiration in her outfits.
My friend wore this look out the other night (there’s a picture on my blog: http://sojournerstorybook.wordpress.com/). It looked rather chic on her. I’m not sure if Rihanna is doing it right. It needs to be more along the lines of Burberry Prorsum.

This look reminds me of the little old Korean ladies that I often saw in the city where I grew up. For some reason they seemed to be quite fond of children’s novelty socks worn with every kind of shoe and every type of outfit, even suits and heels in church.

I like the look, but the colors of the dress and shoes and socks, doesn’t match at all.
When it comes to socks and high heels it all depends not all colors look good but if you pair delicate white socks with white pumps that could look cute. I’m sorry Rihana that look is bad

A few years ago, I often wore legwarmers over my heels, which got me alot of compliments. But never socks. I am getting married in 2 weeks, and I just got this great pair of 5 inch stilettos. they rub my feet wrong, so for my practice walking in them, I have been wearing neon ankle socks with them. It looks terrible, but when people ask, I tell them why and they say it’s a great idea. So would I wear them?
Absolutely. Would I wear them to be fashionable? Hell no! Lol
