We’re in two minds about the clear trench coat.
On the one hand, we can see the practicality of such an item. How many times have you planned a great outfit, only to have to cover it up with a coat when it suddenly starts raining, after all? At least if the coat is see-through, you still get to show off your outfit, and that could be a good thing indeed.
On the other hand, there’s something just a little bit “emperor’s new clothes” about the whole idea, and that makes us think that if we did suddenly decide we were in urgent need of transparent outerwear, we probably wouldn’t want to spend a whole lot of money on solving that problem.
For that reason, we think one of these coats qualifies as Daylight Robbery. The other… well, we just wish the other didn’t have such highly visible pockets.
What do you think? Would you buy a see-through coat (or should that be a “shoat”?)? If so, which one would you buy: Dolce & Gabbana’s, or Topshop’s?
Lets face it – I doubt the plastic is “breathable”, so you’ll end up feeling less than fresh whichever one you wear…
I prefer Topshop’s, except for those highly unfortunate pockets. They spoil what would have been quite an interesting and cute coat.
Reminds me of those clear little plastic scarves women with permed hair use when they’re caught in the rain- anyone else familiar with this?
i know exactly what you’re talking about. these ‘trenches’ are basically glorified dollar store rain ponchos.

i really don’t like either them. plastic is cheap & smells kinda yucky and plasticy, and trench coats are so cute in their traditional beige colors (and sometimes in fun colors & pattern combos, why is clear necessary?). See, this is why I love shoes so much, no matter what coat you’re wearing you can always wear cute shoes and show them off
Absolutely not. I don’t need to say any more.
Clear trench is necessary when you are at an outdoor event where umbrellas are not allowed (or like me, you get tired of carrying them after 3 minutes) but you want something that definitely keeps water away from your person.
The practicality of such an item above an ordinary plastic rain-poncho is:
1. It doesn’t float around in the wind, thus side-rain cannot get in.
2. It doesn’t form miniature folds that gather water, thus when you remove it it doesn’t flood the floor (or yourself).
3. Easier to put on.
4. Easier to take off.
5. Much more durable.
6. When worn over a simple coat or dress of one color, it might not look half bad.
So, if topshop lowered the price to say… 25? and I somehow started to trust a store to deliver abroad I might consider buying it since it always rains in Norway.
The D&G trench is what Kurt wore in the slushie episode of Glee! Love it.

i would buy topshop`s (looks less S&M) but i wouldn`t wear it.

If the Topshop coat were maybe half that price I’d think about it.

i think it looks absolutely hideous. although it would show off a lovely outfit underneath, it distorts it and takes away from the beauty of the outfit you had planned. it also looks a tad cheap (at least, the top shop version. if i had to choose one, i would take the D&G version a million times over.)
I think the topshop one is absolutely fabulous, like a 60s musical outfit. speaking of which, does anyone know where i could find this? i’ve spent more time than i’d like to admit trying to hunt it down and it seems my fashion-detective skills are hideous.

I far prefer the topshop version. The D&G is very looks really nasty in my opinion. I quite like the Top Shop one off, not sure how it would look on! I am considering it.
