Celebrity Style on Trial: Rihanna at the Glamour Magazine Woman of the Year Awards 2009

Rihanna was named one of Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year last night, honoured both for her career and for her “bravery” following her assault by Chris Brown earlier this year.
Our interest in this matter, of course, lies not in the award itself, but in what Rihanna was wearing as she accepted it – in this case, a floor-length Stephanie Rolland gown that made the Fashion Police give a little gasp as soon as we laid eyes on it.
Were we gasping in horror or delight? We’re not going to tell you. Instead, we’re going to leave it up to YOU to tell US what you think of this outfit? She may be Woman of the Year, but does Rihanna win Best Dressed of the Year for this one? You decide…

Does it make a statement? Yes. Most definitely. Do I like it? Nope, not at all.
Statement: don’t let me dress myself.
Totally agree with you Shiny…

Ew… She has this BEAUTIFUL body that she’s covered up on the front in a kind of meringue/origami disguise, you can’t really see her shape at all, it’s like she folded up white cardboard and stuck it to a dress. AND WHAT’S UP WITH THAT USELESS POCKET??? On the back there’s this tacky mesh/zipper fiasco… with tacky see-through cap-sleeves… and her hair. I like that she’s a risk taker with her hair… but it looks really dry – like she dyed the top of it herself at home.
She looks like some horrid art deco staircase.
The back just.. seals the deal for me. It’s given her a fat roll where she definitly didn’t have one before.
Just flat out no!
Though I think the idea is kind of good? I’d like to see less ruffles at the bottom and a more well thought out placement of the ’steps’. It could be an interesting dress but it looks too much like overkill right now.
From the front: WOW, I WANT THAT DRESS! BAD!
From the back: Ummm, if they hadn’t wasted that much fabric for the front, there might have been some left for covering the back… I would have liked to be able to wear a bra underneath.
And I definitely would have preferred it without sleeves and with a wider neckline.
Still it looks gorgeous from the front.
She’s brave alright!
Awful. This is one of those dresses that makes for a fabulous runway show but needs to be toned down for actual wear. Less of the crazy ruffles, and lose the sheer bodice. Then it would be nice.
The ruffles on the front are just PLACED so wrong! Where is she under all that? She looks like the leftover wax paper from an order of fish and chips.
looks great from the front sort of…hate the back and personally i’d like it better if it were cocktail length…the bottom seems like it would only look good in still poses and be extremely hard to walk in
you’d think it would be hard to hide her amazing figure, but apparently not. that’s a no, for me
I gasped when I saw it too. In horror. It’s simply awful.

I keep looking for something about it which I like. There is nothing. The mesh top, I truly hate.
Also her hair. It’s terrible. What did she do to it?
Altogether a big ol’ fashion fail.
HORRORS! OK it’s a crime she’s hidden her amazing figure under this ICEBERG pretending to be a dress. Second I am not liking one bit the big-long-metal-industrial-duty zips up the back of dresses. Thirdly what happened to her usually fantastic hair and make up? I do think she is so stylish usually with that enviable edginess but she misses this time.
Least she’s got the award – bravo!

FAIL.
this girl should just stop letting peolple dress her up! remember her Pon De Replay days?
she went from tomboyish-normal to crazy-”edgy”. I don’t even understand this “edgyness” people keep talking about.
i do applaud her for being brave enough to leave her house in these outfits…

She looks like meringue.
ew
I keep telling people that the woman is seriously crazy but no one will listen to me.
Ever see paper that got stuck in the shredder? That’s what this looks like.
i love the skirt bit but the top needs a wider neckline or something. not best dressed of the year anyway!
I really liked it until I saw the back! It’s really interesting, it’s unique but not too crazy. It’s not the best dress i’ve ever seen but still! From the back it looks kind of silly though!
i think the dress is gorgeous….
I definetely think the dress is different! The front is so geometrical I like it! However, I wish the back wasn’t sheer and instead was backless.
She walked into a wanky museum, fell on one of the statues and it got stuck. Great.
LOOOOOOOVE IT. I just think that it would have worked better on a skinnier girl, because it makes Rihanna look really wide. The ruffles down the front are FANTASTIC. Perhaps the ruffles on the bottom do look a little weird, but all in all, this is a fabulous dress and I would totalllllly rock it if I could.
Oh my, why does she look so pale? I hope it’s just the makeup and she has stayed away from the bleach.
Wrinkled Paper
Not a fan. Too gimmicky and desperate for attention.
I thought the architectural look was interesting, would definitely be better if it didn’t have those awkward cap sleeves and crew neck. What’s with all these dresses lately that have the visible zipper in the back? It just looks cheap most of the time.
WOW!!!!!! Any dress that can be that dramatic and look like some sort of pale work of cubism deserves a standing ovation. There are no bright colors or extreme nudity yet it captures attention and requires a second, third and even fourth look. It may not be everyone’s style, but it is certainly a work of art.

Shudder of horror. Definately!
