Lace bellbottoms

You see, this is what happens when you complain too much about  leggings and skinny jeans: some designers – and by “some designers” we mean “Kova & T” – will go too far in another direction in their attempt to create something different, and we’ll end up fighting a battle against lace bell bottoms instead. Call us crazy, but we’d rather have the leggings-as-pants, thanks very much.

We’re relieved to see that this Shopbop model is at least wearing (or seems to be wearing) a tiny little thong with her shants, though, but let’s face it: we all know some people just won’t bother, and yes, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, we ARE looking at you…

Back zip skinny jeans by Tripp NYC

These jeans make us want to sneak up behind the person wearing them and gently unzip the legs before running away. In fact, we think that’s how the force might just deal with this one -let the punishment fit the crime, we say, and these aren’t quite ugly enough for a stint in the fashion jail.

Or are they?

Arnsdorf jersey bra dress: just what it sounds like

Yes, the cult of the trashy dress has taken a firm hold on the world of fashion, people. A dress just isn’t a dress any more unless it reveals at least one item of underwear, and preferably two. We’re just left wondering what on earth strippers and Katie Price are going to wear in the future, if the rest of us are all prancing around more or less in our underwear all the time? How will we be able to distinguish between hookers and fashionistas? Won’t someone please think of the strippers?!

Gap to open store in China and start selling online in the UK & Canada: now, who’s next?

gap to sell online in uk2 Gap to open store in China and start selling online in the UK & Canada: now, who’s next?

Whee! Soon people in China will be able to dress just like this!

The Fashion Police have had a long-standing, albeit pretty half-assed campaign to get more fashion retailers selling online (and to the WHOLE world, not just a few select parts of it), so while Gap sadly didn’t make it onto our list of Five Fashion Stores We’d Like to See Selling Online, we still have to say: it’s about time.

Yes, Gap will start selling online in the UK and Canada, having previously only shipped within the United States, in 2010, when they’ll also open their first store in China. It’s not clear at the moment if this will apply only to Gap, or to the other Gap-owned brands, like Piperlime and Old Navy, but here’s hoping. We’re not big Gap shoppers ourselves, but still, it’s always good to have another store just a click of the mouse away.

Of our original list of stores who don’t sell online, we’re pleased to note that New Look and George at Asda have since seen sense, and opened transactional websites, so that just leaves Zara, H&M (who sell online in some countries, but not others) and Primark. Come ON, you three, what are you waiting for? The internet’s not going to go away, you know…

Anyone else we’ve missed? Who would you like to see start selling online/internationally?

Wanted! Retro-style lingerie from Topshop

retro lingerie1 Wanted! Retro style lingerie from Topshop

Sequined knickers aside, Topshop actually has some fabulous pieces of actual lingerie in stock at the moment: think longline bras, high-waisted knickers, lace corsets – lingerie with a vaguely retro feel that looks good, but, more importantly, will help create a nice, smooth line under your clothes and, in the case of the high-waisted knickers, provide a bit of stomach-control, too.

We’re particularly liking the current trend for longline bras, and like Topshop’s strapless, longline bustiers, which will be perfect under strapless dresses or bardot tops, meaning you don’t have to either show your bra straps or sacrifice your bra altogether if you want to wear certain styles.

These are all available at Topshop.com.

Fashion Trends: Animal print faux fur coats and jackets

Animal print is one of those things you have to be really careful with. Too much, or the wrong type of garment, and you can end up looking like the legendary Bet Lynch, of Coronation Street fame:

Which is to say: it can be tacky.

Done right, though, we think a little bit of leopard can add a glamorous touch to an outfit, and we have to admit, we’re quite partial to it, in small doses. It’s definitely not a look for everyone, though, which is why today we want to solicit your opinions on one of this winter’s biggest trends: the faux fur, animal print coat. Now, faux fur and animal print are both fairly big this year independently of each other, but it’s when they come together, in the form of outerwear, that we’ve really been noticing them. And we’ve been noticing a LOT of them. We’ve pictured just five animal print jackets above, but if you like them, you won’t have to look too hard to find more. If you hate them, though, well, sorry to hear that, because you’re going to have a hard time avoiding them.

Which is it, though? Love, hate, or something in between? Tell us!
