Style on Trial: Gareth Pugh’s pleated culotte trousers

Gareth-pugh-culottes

At first we were alarmed.

Then we thought, "Well, maybe if you DIDN'T always strike a pose like a 70s disco dancer, it could just work, because they would just look like a long, pleated skirt?":

Long-pleated-skirts

Then we remembvered we don't really like long, pleated skirts anyway, so we're going to leave it up to you. Are Garth Pugh's pleated culottes a crime of fashion? Or are they worth every cent of the $1,967 they cost? Tell us!

  1. Marianne says:

Well, if I had to play cello or string bass with a world famous symphony orchestra, they might be good to have, since finding a long skirt to accommodate large instruments is difficult. Otherwise, no.

  2. Celeste says:

I don’t have a problem with them, but can’t see me wearing them. Especially for $2,000. I just don’t know the event I’d want formal culotte’s for. (Outside of being a symphony cellist, or possibly sidesaddle dressage)

  3. Em says:

Not worth the price, but when the knockoffs start coming out, I may buy them.

  4. spikesnsilk says:

I wouldn’t buy them myself, but I could definitely see them on one of Hollywood’s silver foxes, such as Meryl Streep or Sharon Stone.

  5. Oana says:

they are quite nice, and i would actually buy them but the price is much to high.

  6. sarah says:

    only on old women

  7. Cristina says:

I actually don’t mind them, they remind me a bit of the trousers that Ginger Rogers wears in the ‘Too Hot to Handle’dance routine.
I actually think I’ve seen similar trousers in quite a few 30’s movies, and they can look pretty glamourous if worn in the right combination

  8. gokarm says:

Yeah, like Christina, I like the history that these particular pants conjure up. I never thought I’d see the return of culottes, but these are the best argument FOR them that I’ve seen.

  9. Cookie says:

I have to agree with the old- Hollywood look those pants bring to mind (Though I’d be thinking more of Marlene or Greta in this case), but I don’t look flattering at all, and the price is just horrible!

  10. Evil Dolly says:

I actually kinda like those. But for that price? Never.

  11. Kelly says:

It would look great in a veeeery tall person.

  12. kevie says:

Overpriced, but I’m a sucker for that ’30s-style glamor. Plus, what a nice alternative to freezing your butt off in a skimpy cocktail dress for winter parties. But then, I’m old.

  13. Richmonde says:

The skirt looks like something from a 70s boutique. In Workington.

  14. Katharine says:

I’m not about to buy them for two grand, but I actually had a pair of very similar pants a while back – long, pleated, formal. They were stunning, and comfortable, and elegant, and I loved them. I like the waistband on the Pughs. Mine were sewn down I think or something over the hips. (I am, for the record, quite short and hippy, but for some reason I seem to suit wide-legged trousers anyway. Or at least enjoy wearing them, which is the same thing in the end.)

  15. Melanie says:

With retro 30’s style glam make-up/hair, these trousers could look terrific. I’d wear them. If they made a cheaper version, I’d buy them.

  16. Lilly says:

I actually really, really, like it. That price is absolutely insane, tho.
