We've been loving blazers this year. Us and everyone else, obviously: they've been all over the high street, worn with everything from wet-look leggings to little floral dresses.
Now, though, the blazers are branching out. Not content to be the classic piece of outerwear they always have been, the blazers want to take centre stage, be the life and soul of the party, make the outfit all about THEM. and they want to do this with floral print. LOUD floral print. The kind of floral print that has us reaching for our sunglasses because it's just so! damn! bright!
To say we're not fans of this look would be like saying that Lady Gaga can look a little bit eccentric sometimes. So yeah, we hate it. Although, to be fair, we'd probably say that about any double-breasted blazer, because they're just not our thing.
Topshop had lots of this style in stock just last month, however, so someone out there must like them. Mustn't they? That's why these are up On Trial. What do you think of them? Are they the Crimes of Fashion we think they are, or is there a way to wear them and avoid arrest?

I’ve actually seen a girl wear the one on the left (darker one).. it looked pretty nice! She was wearing black non-wet-look leggings with a plain long vest, and that blazer unbuttoned, no jewellry that I could see and a simple bag.
She looked really nice I thought.. but I can see how difficult these would be to wear without looking incredibly stupid.
Having become an addict of “What Not to Wear” I can say with some authority that these blazers break multiple rules:
1. They are loud
2. They have no shape, which will make the wearer look fat and boxy
3. They are too long, which will make the wearer look short and dumpy
4. The stance (where the top button is) is far too low, which will make the wearer look like she has droopy boobs and no waist
5. They are double-breasted, which will make the wearer look very wide through the middle
You couldn’t give me one of these.
I can already see these on a rack at Goodwill.
Actually I saw the one on the right (the pastel loud flowers *shudder*)on Katy Perry and it looked terrible…1983 called…it wants it’s look back
not a fan
Hi Janet,
Great “What Not to Wear” reference! I knew that a lot more than the pattern of these jackets was “off”. Of course, I was stuck thinking bad wedding singer vs Hyacinth from “Keeping Up Appearances” when I saw these two examples. Your observations were much more relevant.
Oh & just in case you think we’ve escaped this trend on this side of the pond, take a look at this one:

The shape may be better, but using a Liberty print reminiscent of dear Gran’s sheets didn’t help :}
Now I love me some florals, but these are just terrible!
early 90s flashback x_x
nj, I thought of Katy Perry too. What’s even worse is that Katy wore matching pants. Eek!
These jackets look like something a grandmother would wear.
80 alert! 80′S ALERT!!!
