Return of the Scrunchie : the 80s officially live once more

Hair-scrunchie

Remember scrunchies? The ubiquitous hair accessories of the 80s, worn by all, looking good on none?

Scrunchies are back, people. Topshop are selling them.

This is how we know there is no hope for the world. The Four Horsemen of the Fashion Apocalypse are now upon us:

leggings (although, OK, we're totally DOWN with the leggings now.)

acid wash

neon

And now scrunchies.

Its official, readers: we're re-living 1985. And there ain't nothing we can do about it.

Will you wear a scrunchie, though?

  • I used to wear scrunchies all the time when I was a kid; I had dozens of them. In fact, if you had hair long enough to put in a ponytail at my school, you were expected to wear a green scrunchie that matched the uniform.
I had them with beads and all sorts of other embellishments – including some that had legs sticking out and an animal face (I had a spider one).
    NEVER. AGAIN.

    Noooooooooo!!!!!! Say it isn’t so!!

  • I wore scrunchies when I was like 5. I don’t think I’ll be reliving the trend thank you very much.

  • I was raised on the theory, that you odn’t wear it the second time if you wore it the first. Therefore, I have no leggings, or acid wash, or neon, or scrunchies.
I’m 28. I’m a grown-up, and I do not go to Topshop anymore. I shall wear things that suit me, and not just because its in a magazine. That way lies mutton/lanb comparisons.
It’s taken me a few years to realise this, and now I must just try to spread this way of thinking around the world. God, there’s some bad fashion on people who should know better in London!

    No scrunchies for me.

  • I’m wearing a scrunchie right now, though I only wear them out of the house when I forget I have one on. They might be unfashionable, but they don’t pull at my hair like some hair accessories so I like them for bumming around. But when I’m trying to make myself presentable, no scrunchies for me.

  • Scrunchies are great! While I didn’t wear them the first time around, I love them now. As a matter of fact, I cut up a vintage silk scarf to make my own scrunchie.

  • I’m definitely from the age of the scrunchie, so no, I will not be returning. Besides, my hair is too short to wear a scrunchie anyway. It makes me feel nostalgic tho, looking at the scrunchie.

  • I have trichotillomania, and scrunchies are the only ties that can hold up what little hair I have. (Don’t worry, I wear a wig usually, or a headscarf) But I never wear them out of the house. They remind me too much of the little redneck town I grew up in where the 80′s lived on until about 2003. No thanks.

I was a teenager when scrunchies were first in vogue, so I’m not going to be first in line to welcome this trend back. However, if I found an old one lying around the house somewhere and I needed to put my hair up, I would use it–but I wouldn’t wear it out!

  • hehe…sadly they never went away the first time for some of the women i see wandering various grocery stores, walmarts and dollar stores all across Canada…they really say “i wish i was still at that poison concert where blaine gave me that mega pack of jelly bracelets and his neon vuarnet jacket to wear…that was the best night of my life” to me
run away young girls, run away lol

  • oh no! i had these in junior school. Next thing it will be BUMBAGS!!!!!!!

I have VERY long hair. Scrunchies didn’t hold tight enough to support the weight of my waist-length ponytail. Now I use a six-inch wooden hairpin to fix it in a bun. (plus four regular hairpins).

  • Ugh I hate them. Always have. They look so very unhygienic to me.

I keep to the same rule as Kelly. I don’t wear anything a second time around. I have already lived and dressed through the 80′s (as an early-teen admittedly, but it was my first foray into fashion and a particularly dodgy era to be doing so).
So no acid wash, scrunchies, culottes, bodysuits, shoulder pads, hair crimping, fingerless gloves or white fringed leather for me (ever again).

  • No no no no no no!
(P.S. I feel too young to find the sartorial sins of my youth now back in vogue. Anyone else?)

  • I used to wear three or four at a time?!?!? My favourite was a black velety one with gold piping around the outside.

  • Also I totally agree with Lori, I only turned 25 on Tuesday and I already feel old.
(I do however have the get of of jail free card of “my mother made me wear it” !!

  • I wore a lot of them in my childhood an early things… god I feel so old and I am 22!!!!

My hair’s too short, but even if it wasn’t… hell no!

  • I’m really puzzled. I’ve been wearing scrunchies for years. i can’t think why people are so down on them. I have long thick hair, so i can’t wear normal ponytail bands cos they break, so i have to wear a scrunchie. I think when most people think of scrunchies they think of those nasty velvet one’s that are usually in a horrible gold or brown colour. The one i wear are just normal one’s in just one colour like white or navy.
I like to wear scrunchies and will continue to do so, whether they are in fashion or not. so there!!!!
