Fashion Police Detectives: Guess what it is?

Mystery item Fashion Police Detectives: Guess what it is?

As we've said before,The Fashion Police are always deeply distrustful of items of clothing/accessories that can't be instantly identified. If it's a skirt, say, we want to be able to SEE that it's a skirt, and not mistake it for a handbag. And if it's a handbag, but it looks like a tuna fish, we're probably going to be alarmed.

With that in mind, we now ask you to play Fashion Police Detectives with us, and identify the item you see above. All we'll tell you is that it IS a fashion item of some kind: but what is it?

Place your guesses in the comments box, and check back later when all will be revealed!

EDIT: The answer has now been posted under the jump, so read on and all will be revealed…

River Island, New Look and the mysterious case of the ruffled bow skirt

Ruffled bow skirt River Island, New Look and the mysterious case of the ruffled bow skirt

OK. Now, we have no idea who came up with this design first, but we think we're going to have to place both River Island and New Look on a warning here, because seriously. Seriously. Is it just us, or do these look like lampshades from a particularly cheap bordello?

If we absolutely had to wear one of these, we think we'd go for the New Look version which, at £20, is £10 cheaper than River Island's attempt, and also much less.. ruffled. We're just going to cross our fingers, though, and hope nothing DOES happen to force us to wear one of these: what about you?

Fashion Police Fraud Squad: Valentino Vs Paris Hilton in the case of the red bow peep toe shoes

Valentino bow peep toes3 Fashion Police Fraud Squad: Valentino Vs Paris Hilton in the case of the red bow peep toe shoes

Oh, Paris Hilton, shame on you! Don't you have enough money as it is without having to copy other people's designs?

These 'Senorita' pumps from Paris Hilton's shoe line aren't a direct copy of Valentino's high heeled sandals in that one's a slingback and one's a d'orsay pump, but when Shoeperwoman directed our attention to them on Friday, we couldn't help but think that a bit of "inspiration" had been taken from the designer shoe somewhere along the line.

Then again, the idea of a bow-fronted peep toe is hardly a new one, and neither is the concept of high street knockoffs, so maybe we should go easy on Paris (or the people who design for her), who's only done the same thing as many others before her? What do you think?

Drew Barrymore goes to see Green Day wearing a tablecloth

Spl104798 008[2] Drew Barrymore goes to see Green Day wearing a tablecloth

Seriously, Drew? Seriously? We normally love you to pieces, but what on earth happened here? Because it looks to us like you went out for dinner, tucked the tablecloth into your dress to guard against spillages, and then just got up and walked out still wearing it. You also really amused that guy standing behind you. We're wondering if you have your eyes closed here so you can't see what you're wearing.

This outfit actually becomes even more bizarre when you realise she was wearing what look like acid wash jeans underneath it. And she's been doing so well recently, too…

Holy Moley: Daniel Palillo’s lightweight sweatshirt with cutout holes

Holey top Holy Moley: Daniel Palillos lightweight sweatshirt with cutout holes

It's for people with better abs than us, obviously. And who don't mind flashing their boobs. (Actually, if you're particularly tall, you might want to try this on first – you never know where those cut-outs will end up, do you?) And who live in a warm climate.

Actually, we're assuming it's meant to be worn as a layering piece: it's the long-sleeved version of the Daniel Pallino t-shirt we showed you a while back, only with bigger holes, and if you want to buy it, it's $136.50 from here. Just be careful your mum doesn't try to sew up the holes for you…

Return of the skort: denim skirt/shorts from Karmaloop

Skorts Return of the skort: denim skirt/shorts from Karmaloop

It used to be the case that skorts (skirt in front, shorts in back – sort of like a reverse mullet) were the summer equivalent of "mom jeans" – the type of garment that was only ever worn by … well, by the kind of people who wear mom jeans, basically.

But the times, they are a-changing, and now Karmaloop are selling skorts too. Now, in fairness to the skorts shown above, they're one of the least skort-like pairs we've seen, looking much more like an actual skirt than many other pairs. But would you wear skorts? If you would, these ones are $88 and you can buy them here.

The latest incarnation of harem pants, from Kookai

Harem pants The latest incarnation of harem pants, from Kookai

The good news is that the shape of harem pants is changing. The low, droopy crotches are slowly starting to disappear, and this can only be a good thing as far as The Fashion Police are concerned.

The bad news is that they're being replaced with these. Trousers that aren't really what we'd call "harem" style at all, but are just regular wide-legged pants… with an elasticated ankle.

We've already seen the elasticated ankle crop up on the 'Sultana pants' we featured earlier this month – these ones aren't nearly as baggy, but we reckon they're still pretty unflattering. What do you think?

If you love then, they're available from ASOS for  £59.

Style Challenge: What to wear with … gladiator sandals!

Gladiator sandals! Style Challenge: What to wear with ... gladiator sandals!

For our next Style Challenge, we're going a little bit easier on you. Gladiator sandals, as you all know, are the trend that just won't die at the moment: they're everywhere, and on everyone, and if you're lucky, you may even like them, in which case this challenge will be super-easy for you!

We get a lot of emails from people who want to know just what they're supposed to wear with gladiator sandals, though, so for the benefit of those people – and also just for fun – your challenge is to use Polyvore to build an outfit around the sandals you see above.

The comments on this entry will stay open until sometime on Monday, to allow you to post the link to your item, and you'll find the rules of the game under the jump. Have fun!
