Style on Trial: Matthew Williamson corset ruffle hem dress
"Make like Madonna circa 1980…" says Net-a-Porter of this Matthew Williamson dress. And that's about as far as we got before deciding we had to put it up On Trial. And don't get us wrong: we loved Madonna in the 80s. It's just that we don't want to look like Madonna-in-the-80s now. (Actually, we don't really want to look like Madonna now, now, either, but that's a whole other issue, and we're pretty sure she wouldn't want to look like us either. But anyway.)
The real reason this dress is On Trial is that we've seen a few variations of this hugely be-ruffled hem recently, on our travels around the Internet, and we're curious to know what you all think of it. For ourselves, the combination of print, corset and hem is just too much, and obviously the same can be said of the £1,495 price. Is it so OTT that it's guilty of crimes of fashion, though, or would you like to acquit this suspect, and maybe even take it home with you?
I would never buy anything like it for myself because really, where’s the occasion suited in everyday life? But there are steps he might have taken to make me not hate it, like abandoning the tie-die pattern. As it is…blech.
I’ll second the blech, but not even a change of color would save this dress in my eyes. I think the ruffles would be pretty unflattering on most people.
It makes me think of sea anemones and corals.

Nah… Not even Madonna would’ve wear this back in the past. Even she has a limit.
Except for the price tag it makes me think of a 1980s themed Halloween costume.
It looks very odd in this picture, but I saw it in a magazine and thought it looks really good on a person… albeit a very skinny person.

Awwww I absolutely LOVE this dress!! I’m 20, quite tall and skinny and can picture it looking great on me. Would wear it to a club any day *inlove*!
I would def wear this JUS BECAUSE everyone else said they wouldnt. I absolutely LUV this dress!!!!
