Balmain’s military style denim jacket sells out instantly at Net-a-Porter

Balmain military style jack Balmains military style denim jacket sells out instantly at Net a Porter

It seems fashionistas are continuing to laugh in the face of the recession: this military style denim jacket by Balmain apparently sold out within minutes of hitting the Net-a-Porter website this week – even although it was being sold for the not-so-bargain price of £2,920 / $4,220.

We like the style of the jacket, if not the bleached denim, which we think will date very quickly (and if we're paying $4,000 for a jacket, we're not going to want it to date AT ALL, ever), and clearly Balmain is enjoying a spate of huge popularity at the moment, but what do you think of it? Worth the money? Something you'd wear? Tell us!

Style on Trial: Vivienne Westwood Red Label Witch silk-blend dress

Vivienne westwood dress Style on Trial: Vivienne Westwood Red Label Witch silk blend dress

The Fashion Police love Vivienne Westwood, we really do. We’d live inside her closet if we could. Well, OK, maybe not.

Recent discussions on the rise (and rise.. and rise…) of wet-look fashion, however, has made us stop and think twice about this dress. It’s called a “Witch” dress, and we can see why, because it has more than a touch of the “Oh, hai, I’m your next Halloween costume!” about it, no? And the back has… well, we hesitate to mention it, but maybe just a touch of the “bin bag”:

Because it’s Viv, though, we really want to like it, so we’re going to abdicate all responsibility on this one and simply put it to you, readers: is this a crime of fashion? Or is it innocent of all charges?

Fashion Police Glossary: Daylight Robbery

Cropped jersey trousers Fashion Police Glossary: Daylight Robbery Continuing in our occasional series in which we provide definitions of some of the terms used here at The Fashion Police, we bring you the very embodiment of the term “Daylight Robbery“, in the shape of the cropped jersey trousers you see to the left.

Daylight Robbery offences are distinct from crimes of fashion in that the items concerned are not always ugly (although some are, of course). Take these trousers. No, they’re not the most exciting items in the world – they’re a little saggy and sad looking, but they’re the kind of thing you might wear around the house if you just wanted to be comfortable and relax.

But they’re £255 / $370. Not a huge amount of money in the great scheme of things, but expensive for a pair of cropped jersey pants.

Why is this, do you think? Is it because they’re of superior quality? Well, they’re a nylon/rayon mix, which doesn’t sound particularly luxurious to us. Are they a totally unique design? Again, we’ve seen lots of pairs of pants like this, so no, not really. Was their designer up all night, in a fever of creativity, in order to come up with a piece of wearable art? We doubt it.

Is it just because they’re designed by Rick Owens, then? We think we could be onto something, here. In fact, we strongly suspect the only reason people would consider these to be worth that amount of money, is because of the label inside them. That, readers, is what makes them an act of Daylight Robbery.

DAYLIGHT ROBBERY, then, is defined as the act of charging the earth for something that’s just not worth it, whatever it is. You’ll find more examples in our Daylight Robbery archive

What do you think, though? Would you pay £255 for something like this? Are we missing something?

Cesare Paciotti has The Fashion Police seeing double

Paciotti heels Cesare Paciotti has The Fashion Police seeing double

Normally our love of Cesare Paciotti knows no bounds. But then we found one. A "bound", that is. Because when the Chief of Police first looked at these, she actually thought she was having a migraine, such is the "double vision" effect, and when a shoe quite literally makes you feel ill, that's not a good sign, is it?

We found these at WWD, who say they're by Paciotti, but we couldn't find them on the designer's website. Perhaps that's a good thing?

Dress of the Day: bright yellow ruffle one-shoulder dress from River Island

Yellow ruffle dress Dress of the Day: bright yellow ruffle one shoulder dress from River Island

Well, it’s definitely bright and it’s definitely yellow, and that means it’s definitely not going to work for everyone, but if you’re able to pull off this particular shade, we think this yellow dress from River Island could look stunning. Even although it does remind us of a flower….

Case Closed: Claire Merry wears Pam Hogg’s ‘Space Girl’ jumpsuit

Spl94906 001[1] Case Closed: Claire Merry wears Pam Hoggs Space Girl jumpsuit

Today The Fashion Police are able to close yet another puzzling case: The Mystery of the Pam Hogg Spacesuit, and Who on Earth Would Wear It.

The answer? Claire Merry. Model. Ex-wife of footballer Thierry Henry. And so far the only person brave enough to venture out in public in this item, which she wore to the London Premiere of Star Trek. Perhaps she came as one of the characters in the movie?

Admittedly, Claire appears to be one of those people who'd probably look good in a sack, so we're really not sure whether to applaud her for having the balls to wear this, or to throw the book at her. What do you think of this as a red carpet look?

Wear or Die: Comme des Garcons edition

Comme des garcons wod Wear or Die: Comme des Garcons edition

Our investigations in the Comme des Garcons section of Yoox.com yesterday made us wonder if there was anything else there we should be taking note of.

These two sack dresses aren't in the same league as those infamous bloomers, of course, but they did make us wonder: if we had to wear one of them – or die – which one would we choose?

That's the question facing you now, readers: would you rather be the madwoman in the attic or an extra from Little House on the Prairie? You decide! It's either that … or death!

Biba for Topshop – what do you think?

Biba for topshop Biba for Topshop what do you think?

This model is waving her hands in the air, like she just don't care. Why? Because she's modelling pieces from the Biba for Topshop collection, which launches this Thursday. Well, wouldn't you be excited, too? Even although the clothes in question may or may not be pyjamas?

Pyjamas-side, we're excited about this collection because… well, because it's designed by Barbara Hulanicki of Biba, and that's all kinds of cool. What about the clothes themselves, though? Well, there are some images under the jump, and you can view the full look book here. Remember to tell us what you think!
