Aaaaand here’s your regularly-scheduled retro-style fashion fix for the week!
The collar on this dress reminds us of the L’Wren Scott ‘Headmistress’ dress we featured as a Dress of the Day back in January, but the pops of red on the buttons and belt, plus the fact that this one will hit on, or just above, the knee, as opposed to at mid-calf length, makes it much less severe, and actually quite fun.
We know it's not until tomorrow, but just in case anyone's wondering what to get us, we think we'd rather have a pair of these than real flowers, any day.
They're by Salvador Sapena and are £170 from ASOS.com. You know, just in case you need some ideas…
The Fashion Police would've been ALL OVER this dress when we were young. Just look at it: it's one part ballerina's tutu, one part trashy princess, and another part that looks vaguely like something the 'Like a Virgin' era Madonna would've totally worn.
These days? Let's just say we're not so keen.
We are a little confused, though, because we didn't find this while policing one of our regular prom-dress hangouts, but at ASOS.com, where it's priced at £250. Or rather, where is WAS priced at £250, because almost as soon as that dress appeared on the ASOS website, it sold right out.
Tell us, then, readers: are our instincts guiding us wrong on this one? Is this dress just as fabulous to grown adults as it would've been to our eight-year-old selves? Tell us!
The Fashion Police are all about jackets right now. This has worked out quite well for us, actually, because there are a lot of jackets around to love at the moment: leather biker jackets, slouchy tuxedo jackets, trenches (OK, so they tend to be coats rather than jackets, but still…) and now this asymmetric fitted jacket from Miss Selfridge, which is £45, but has a hint of the Vivienne Westwood about it that we appreciate.
We love the sharp tailoring on this, and the fact that the flared hip area helps make the waist look smaller. The asymmetric design, meanwhile, makes it that little bit unusual, and it’s the kind of design that’ll look equally good worn over a dress/with a skirt, or thrown on casually with jeans.
Topshop describe these as "statement" heels, and well, we guess they got that one right! Do you like the statement these are making, though? They've presumably been inspired by the legions of weird and wonderful heel shapes we've been seeing from designer brands, both this season and last, and the Unique line has taken this jagged stiletto and added it to everything from colourful courts to ankle boots, "shoots2 and sandals. Prices start from £90 and you can view the line at the Topshop website. But what do you think of them?
It’s not like us to be jonesing for Marc Jacobs – or, indeed for quilted things in general, come to think of it – but we can’t help but feel drawn to this “Bruna” tote bag. Maybe it’s just down to the lovely bronze leather, but we also quite like the strap around the middle, with its suggestion of, “Whoops, my bag was so full I just had to tie my belt around it to hold it shut!” We don’t quite know why we like that idea, of course, but sometimes ours is not to question why, and so all we’ll say is that if you like it too, it’s £850 from NET-A-PORTER .
Another Dress of the Day chosen by one of our readers! This dress was nominated by Courtney, who writes:
“I came across a dress in Look magazine the other day and though it was lovely so went to see if I could get it, amazingly they had it in my size and its so flattering on and cute as well! The dress is actually from Asda of all places, only £18! It can be bought on the website or in selected stores and I think it’s awesome!”
Courtney is correct that the dress can be bought online, but only if you’re a UK size 8 (click here if you are), so if you like it as much as Courtney did, you may need to have a look in your local store.
As ever, if you’d like to nominate your own Dress of the Day just email us with a link to the dress and a couple of lines telling us why you like it!
