Wanted! Vila Ruched Sweat Jacket

Sweat jacket Wanted! Vila Ruched Sweat Jacket

Remember the Dorothy Perkins ruffle-front coat we put on the “Wanted” list back in August? Here’s a nice “sweat jacket” version from ASOS which we think would be pefect for casual wear. Fleecy sweat jackets are invaluable to those of us who find ourselves permanently freezing, but they can be just a little bit too casual for anything other than “slobbing out” purposes. This one, on the other hand, is smart but smuggly – win!

It’s £29.50 from ASOS, and is also available in grey.

Fashion Police Glossary: “Shress”

shress Fashion Police Glossary: Shress Definition: In the language we like to think of as “fashion-speak”, a “shress” is simply a sheer dress. Sheer dress = “shress”. See what they did there?

(See also: “Shants“)

The “shress” first came to the notice of the Fashion Police in the 2007/2008 season, when various designers (Dior, Christopher Kane, etc)  began parading them down their runways. Clearly these designers were (mostly) just having a laugh, but some retailers decided to take the so-called “trend” seriously, and tried to flog the “shresses” to unsuspecting buyers, thus creating an “Emperor’s New Clothes” type scenario in which people would be expected to pay a small fortune for… well, nothing really.

And still it goes on. The Fashion Police have yet to hear of anyone other than Agyness Deyn (who doesn’t really count) actually wearing a “shress” in real life, but some retailers continue to offer them for sale. The one on this page is a particularly good example of the breed, allowing its wearer to essentially walk around naked, having paid £180 for the privilege. We wouldn’t really class it as “not safe for work” because we think the model’s wearing a flesh-coloured thong, but we’re putting it behind a cut, just to be on the safe side.

Aretha Franklin’s hat steals show at Barack Obama’s inauguration

We weren’t going to mention it, but seeing the issue was raised in the comments on our Michelle Obama post, we’re going to raise our heads above the parapet and admit that, yes, we totally thought Aretha Franklin’s hat stole the show at Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony today. Aretha, The Fashion Police salute you – and would love to know where you got it…

Michelle Obama wears Isabel Toledo dress and coat for inauguration

6a00d8341c873353ef010536e846c5970c Michelle Obama wears Isabel Toledo dress and coat for inauguration

On this historic day, we weren’t sure whether we should even bother fighting crimes of fashion, to be honest, because let’s face it, today there’s really only one thing worth talking about: we refer, of course, to First Lady Michelle Obama’s choice of outfit for her husband’s inauguration, and, later, for the celebrations that will follow it.

Well, here’s Michelle’s first outfit: a yellow/gold dress and coat by Isabel Toledo, worn with green gloves and shoes. The Fashion Police approve.

Dress of the Day: Somewhere, Anywhere dress from Anthropologie

anthropologie dress Dress of the Day: Somewhere, Anywhere dress from Anthropologie

OK, this dress would be totally unsuitable for the kind of weather we’re currently getting here at Fashion Police HQ, but it’s pretty enough that if we could possibly find a way to justify it, we’d buy it and stash it away until summer, when we’d wear it to picnics, and garden parties, and all of those other events we don’t actually get invited to, but which would be the perfect place to wear a little floral dress.

If you like it too, it’s £119 from Anthropologie.

Jumpsuits: still on the Fashion Police hit list

bloomer suit Jumpsuits: still on the Fashion Police hit list

Oh, for the love of… What is it with jumpsuits, eh? Why is it that every time we start to reconcile ourselves to their existence: to tell ourselves that, why, they’re really just like wearing a top and trousers in the same colour, and not even we can object to that, something like this comes along.

Now, we’d have been prepared to let this go, to pass on its way unhindered, if it wasn’t for the small matter of the elasticated legs. Because let’s be honest here, this isn’t so much a jumpsuit as a bloomer suit, and we’re sure you won’t need us to tell us why that’s wrong.

"Who knew elegance could be this easy?" asks Shopbop.  "Who knew jumpsuits could double as parachutes this easy?" answer The Fashion Police…

Style on Trial: Haute’s short dress with, er, shoulder detail

zucca dress Style on Trial: Hautes short dress with, er, shoulder detail

We’re just not “feeling” this one. Or, indeed, understanding it, for that matter. Seriously, is that Photoshop, or has this dress somehow contrived to make the model’s actual shoulders look like they’re protruding from her collarbone like… actually, we don’t know what that’s like, to be honest. But it doesn’t look quite human somehow, does it?

With that, you can probably guess how we feel about this dress, but enough about us: what do you make of it? Do you find the shoulders pleasantly dramatic/possibly just photographed badly, or do they scare you a little bit too?

(If not, it’s £375 here.)

Star Style Wars: Angelina Jolie and Katy Perry in white trousers suits

spl73621 0081 Star Style Wars: Angelina Jolie and Katy Perry in white trousers suitsJust for a change, Angelina Jolie wore white on the red carpet last night, choosing a trouser suit for the Berlin premiere of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. (Brad Pitt accessory not included.) Katy Perry, meanwile, also went for the white trouser suit, wearing hers to the 10th NRJ Music Awards in Cannes this week.

While Angelina kept things classy with wide-leg trousers and a loose white top, however, Katy went for a slightly fumkier look with bright red lips, a sharp bob, black top and peep toes. But who wore the white suit best? Naturally, we decided to start a style war to find out. Who do you think wins this one?
