peplumskirts Fashion Trends: peplum skirts

The peplum skirt (or dress) has popped up in fashion at various points in history, most noteably during the 40s, when this look was all the rage, but it looks like the peplum is having a bit of a “moment” again this winter, with a huge amount of skirts and dresses featuring this distinctive style.

What does everyone think of it, though? We’re normally huge fans of anything even remotely 40s-inspired, but we have to admit that while we don’t hate it by any means, this isn’t our favourite look, purely because we prefer our pencil skirts unadorned, and we think peplums can look a little fussy if not done right. When they are done right, though? Well, that’s a whole other matter…

What do you think about the current revival of the peplum, readers? Do you love it, or will you be happy to see it drift back off the fashion radar?

  1. I like it a lot; though after working on one the whole evening yesterday and still not being happy with the result I am inclined to say that they are hard to wear if you’re not tall and slim.

  2. Too 80s for my taste. I prefer my ruffled skirts of the tiered variant; adds shape and interest, but doesn’t look like you’re a candy wrapper gone wrong.

  3. i think every skirt above would have been better unadorned.they doesnt seem right to me and i dont get the effect they are trying to make.
    sexy? powerful? girlie?
    80′s nostalgia? maybe the last one only.

  5. I like the Karen Millen one, but not the Asos (too clingy) or Topshop (nasty material). I also wouldn’t mind having a bank balance to go with my tastes ;-}

  6. hmm depends really..i personally like them..i’ve got a peplum dress which is very flattering as the ruffles cover the stomach area which hides any lumps or bumps you may have.

  7. I love them. I think it’s great for people who haven’t got the legs for a tight fitted skirt because it hides all that.
