Now, we know many of our US readers will be too busy enjoying the holiday to be fretting over crimes of fashion, but for those of you who’ve found the time to check in with The Fashion Police, we thought we’d give some thanks of our own. Fashion-related thanks, natch. So, right now The Fashion Police are thankful for:
1. The fact that Crocs seem to be losing popularity.
It’s not happening quite quickly enough for us, of course, but our eyeballs aren’t being assaulted by Crocs quite as often as they were last year, and if that’s not a reason to be thankful, we don’t know what is.
2. Skinny jeans
People have been predicting their demise for years now, but they’re still around, and even although we know many of our readers would like to feed us to the sharks for continuing to love skinnies, we don’t care, because you’ll be prising them off our cold, dead legs.
3. Christian Louboutin, Roland Mouret & Vivienne Westwood.
Because they make the world a prettier place.
4. The British high street
Because it gives us budget versions of designer fashions we couldn’t otherwise afford, plus some little gems of its own. Topshop, Miss Selfridge, Primark, River Island, Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse, Oasis, French Connection, ASOS, New Look – we salute you. And the rest of the stores we’ve neglected to mention here, too.
5. Net-a-Porter
Best. Online. Store. Ever. FACT.
6. Our readers
We don’t want to get all mushy and embarrass you, and we are tough cops after all, but you guys are great, you know that? * Group hug *
Your turn, readers: what fashion-related (or what the hell, non-fashion related if you want) things are you feeling grateful for?
Gucci’s fringed ‘Devendra’ ankle boots have graced the feet of many a celebrity this winter, but let’s face it, at $850, they’re not exactly cheap – and that’s the sale price. The Fashion Police’s detectives, however, have been hard at work and have tracked down these ‘Kaya’ boots by Dune, which aren’t quite as tall, granted, but then again, they’re not quite as pricey either, and they’ll give you the same basic look – assuming, of course, that it’s a look you want to go for. Is it?
Just in case you haven’t noticed, times are tough for a lot of people right now. In fact, times are so tough that the designers at Acne have clearly been reduced to using the off-cuts they found on the cutting room floor to put together this dress . The Fashion Police certainly admire this ‘Make Do and Mend’ spirit, but we’re a little confused by the price – £385 for something that looks like it was patched together during wartime? We don’t think so.
What about you, though, readers? Would you buy this?
We all know that a good blazer is one of those “wardrobe staples” fashion mags are always banging on about, and that’s particularly true during the summer, when you can sling one on with a pair of jeans and a tank top and still look pulled together. A smart jacket is also a great buy during the Christmas party season, too, though, because few things look better thrown over a little party dress -just ask Gwyneth Paltrow if you don’t believe us.
Sure, this black tail jacket from River Island isn’t going to keep you warm, but if you’re doing a quick “car to bar” hop, or just want something to keep you warm once you’re inside your chosen venue, it’ll help reduce the girlieness of some party dresses, and will look equally good with jeans and heels. Oh, and you’ll get lots of use out of it next Spring/Summer, too. Which is precisely why it’s “Wanted”. Preferably alive.
OK, so it’s not exactly the same outfit, because this dress is grey and the last one was black, but Victoria Beckham clearly likes this style a whole lot, because it’s the second time she’s been spotted wearing The Dress – the first time being at Heathrow Airport back in October.
Well, we don’t blame her. We loved this dress the first time she wore it, in black, and we love this grey version, too, so it looks like we’re going to have to get our detectives working round the clock to discover the identity of the designer. Unless, of course, any of our readers can help us out?
Yes, it’s yet another Black Halo dress. We’ll stop making them Dress of the Day when they stop creating dresses that make us wish we were richer so we could just buy then all and have done with it.
This is another one for the “simple but stunning” files. There’s been rather a lot of these around lately, and the current economic climate is making many of us more likely to invest in something classic that will last for years rather than the kind of dress that will make jaws drop, but be so distinctive that you’ll only ever wear it once.
This definitely falls into the first category: different accessories will give it a different look, meaning that even although the price tag is $385, you’ll be able to get the cost-per-wear much lower than that.
The Fashion Police have a bit of a girl-crush on Cheryl Cole right now. Because, let’s face it, she’s absolutely gorgeous, isn’t she? Seriously, lookit how gorgeous she is, with her cute little dimples and her shiny, shiny hair. And her giant red PEEP TOE BOOTS. Ah. And there’s the rub. As much as we love her, we can’t really understand why anyone would want to steal this particular element of Cheryl’s style, but if you do, we feel duty bound to report that the boots in question are by D&G and cost £370 from My Wardrobe.
Would you wear them? Do you like them? Do you like them on Cheryl?
The British Fashion Awards. If ever there was a time when The Fashion Police could expect to be able to take the night off and sit back and relax, safe in the knowledge that the world was safe from crimes of fashion for one night at least, you’d think that would be it, no?
You would think wrong, though. Take a look under the jump to see what we had to deal with at last night’s awards…
