Prada’s two-part lace-up boots: clever, or just plain odd?

prada boots Pradas two part lace up boots: clever, or just plain odd?

Buying boots can be tough. Do you buy ankle boots or knee boots, for instance? You know as soon as you choose one, you’ll desperately need the other, so what’s a girl to do?

Well, Prada have a suggestion here: buy both, in the shape of these lace-up, two-part boots. They start off as ankle boots, but you should you suddenly decide you need knee boots instead, you just whip out the "extra" bit, lace it on, and you’ll look just like… Well, you see, this is the difficult bit. The bit where that clever plan falls down a little. Because we were going to say "you’ll look just like you’re wearing a pair of knee boots", but that’s not completely true, is it? Actually, you’ll just look like you’re wearing ankle boots, with an "extra" bit strapped onto your calves. Or like someone cut your knee boots in half by mistake. Hmmm.

Now, The Fashion Police wouldn’t wear these particular boots even if they didn’t have the "cut in half" feature, so we’re ill-qualified to judge on whether this is a good idea or a bad one. What do you think?

  1. I like the overall style of the boot — I’d especially like it if it were a single boot and not, as you describe, an ankle boot with an “extra bit” above it. The problem is that these are LACE UP boots, which are pain in the patoot to put on/take off. I’d consider them if they had a well-hidden zipper on the inside, so that the laces didn’t have to be undone from top to bottom twice for each day the boots were worn.
What I can’t picture with this design is how does the top half stay in place? It seems that since they are only held by the laces in front, the back would shift up and down with walking, sitting cross-legged, etc.

  2. Is it due to the economic crisis that designers are now coming up with these 2-in-1 clothing combos? It’s like they’re trying to convince you to pay thousands on a single article of clothing because–look!–it’s actually TWO articles of clothing!

  3. I think it’s actually quite clever. Especially if I was paying £600 for a pair of shoes, I would think I was getting my money’s worth. If the extra bit of the boot would be definately staying as part of the botton bit, they’d get a thumbs up from me…I’ve been looking for some Victorian Style lace ups..

  4. I’m really feeling that heel, and if the upper and lower part could be hooked together, I’d be drooling over them in a heartbeat. But as ankle boots and shin-guards? I don’t know…
