My parents raised me to be very thrifty, so (like with a good pair of boots) I’ll buy one decent winter coat and wear it to death. I only bought my recent one because I lost my old winter coat while moving house. I keep seeing some frankly gorgeous specimens out and about (there’s one coat I’m currently pining for) but I never feel that I can justify spending the money.

I tend to buy one really good quality coat every few years, and wear it most of the time.

I’m with Erica, because here in California (we live in the valley) it never gets cold enough for a new coat every winter. I have a brown-patterned one from Target and a lovely black one I got at Miss Selfridge when I was in London in 2007, and these are what I switch between when it gets cold enough.
What we really have here is heavy rain, so pretty winter coats that are not waterproof are not much use anyway … sigh.

I don’t set out to buy a new winter coat every year, but I will buy multiple coats if I like them or find a good sale. So I have quite a few coats that I wear in rotation for several years before retiring them. I love having a variety, especially in the dreary winter!

I do buy a new winter coat every year, but I also keep the oldies but goodies, like my long black pea coat or my black-and-white houndstooth coat.

I have several warm coats, but I only qualify one as my “winter coat.” To me a winter coat is a wool topcoat with a warm lining that is dressy but not a dress coat. I also have a few utilitarian warm jackets for practical situations and one long dress coat. The jackets are replaced when they wear out and my “winter coat” usually lasts at least 3 years and gets replaced at my discretion (fashion/wear/boredom). Outerwear is an investment, so I go for classic cuts and good designers (right now I have a Calvin Klein black wool coat with military details).

I JUST bought a new coat from H&M. It’s utterly the most fantastic coat I’ve ever worn. Other than that, I only have one other pea coat.

I normally wear the same winter coat for awhile because I live in Houston and it really does not get so cold here. But if I lived somewhere with a better climate I would buy some more!
