Would you pay to borrow jewellery?

Jewellery_bluebangleSick of wearing costume jewellery? Want to wear something a little more unusual, but don’t fancy paying a fortune for it? Well, bluebangle.com has the answer – hire it.

This service is similar to the designer bag-borrowing sites we’re all pretty familiar with by now – Bag, Borrow or Steal is the first example that springs to mind. The idea here is more or less the same: you pay for a monthly subscription to the site (subscription prices start from £14.99 per month) and, for that, you get to select jewellery from the website up to a pre-defined value, which is then delivered to your door, and is yours to borrow for as long as you need to.

There’s more information at the company’s website, where you can also browse the full range of jewellery available. What do you think of this idea, though? Would you pay to borrow jewellery, or do you prefer to buy it outright or stick to the costume stuff?

If I borrowed it and knew I’d have to return it, I just KNOW my cats would chew up an earring! Besides, jewellery has sentimental value to me, and I like owning it. =)

I’d love to borrow jewelery! I just wonder about the theft rate for this site, though..

If I had a need to dress up often, I think it would be awesome. After all, once you wear something really awesome (whether it is a dress or jewelry) it then becomes virtually impossible to wear it again to a similar event, especially if some of the same people might be there. For someone on a budget that needs to dress up often, it’s a great idea.

no way. at bagborroworsteal, they charge high [i think], and if you love it just save up and buy it yourself.
it seems gross to me to wear earrings that hundreds of other people wore. ew.

i think this is a pretty good idea. i have a stack of jewellery in my jewellery box that i bought but only wore a couple of times. i would rather borrow so i can wear different things all the time. you can borrow for just a special occasion or you can become a member and borrow and swap as often as you like.

I think it’s a great idea for that one evening you want to feel REALLY special. Like…I dunno, a wedding day :D. I’d love to be dripping in yellow diamonds for my wedding, but I know I couldn’t afford that.

Am I the only person who is thinking of the short story ‘the necklace’ where a woman borrows a necklace, loses it, and then works herself nearly to death to replace it only to find out it was costume jewelry.
Also, shipping expensive jewelry through the mail seems dangerous.

I attribute a sentimental value to most of my jewelry, but very little of it would be suitable for a fancy shindig. Something like this could be very useful if you really need the Wow! factor but can’t afford it, nor really want to wear a cheap knockoff, as cheap jewelry rarely looks anything but cheap.
