Tartan Terrors: DSquared2′s plaid ankle boots

tartan terrors Tartan Terrors: DSquared2s plaid ankle boots

It’s starting. All that tartan the Fall/Winter collections threatened us with back in February is slowly starting to trickle into the stores. Some of it is OK. Passable. Quite cute, even. And some of it… isn’t.

We think these ankle boots by Dsquared2 fall into the second category, not just because of the tartan, but because of that awful, thick sole. We’ve already had cause to be concerned about what Amanda dubbed “snow plough soles” this month, and we’re really hoping that this second sighting of the style isn’t a sign of things to come. We can live with the tartan in (very) small doses, but we just don’t think we can stand an entire winter of these soles. If you can, however, these are $899 at Zappos.

  1. I don’t think that’s all fair, because it isn’t really the tartan that’s making these shoes so horrible but it’s the shoe’s themselves. The buckles, the detailing, that sole..all kinds of awful!

  2. To be fair, for those $899 you will get the best (That means worst) of the early 90′s with theese.. The horrible Spice Girls plateau, the black plastic and plaid morbid combo..
If you can’t afford them, but still want to wear the 90′s, get a Turtles/Power Rangers costume

  3. ahahaha, ricki, i was thinking the same thing. They’re sooo 90′s! I can’t see a single thing that’s updated or fresh. Not hot, definitely not hot. And just to note, I don’t mind tartan at all, but keep the pattern off my shoes!

  4. Around here, only the goth kids sport tartan. And with the buckles and general obnoxiousness of these shows, I’m sure they’d eat them up. Maybe literally.
It’s a shame, though, because I do like a splash of tartan here and there in the fall. On a scarf, a winter jacket, even a little jumper dress is cute. Reminds me of a new school year, which I used to love.

  5. I have a tartan peacoat that I ADORE. It’s in a similar pattern to these, and it has all the things I love in a coat…nipped in waist, well-cut sleeves and shoulders, and a warm, cuddly lining.
These shooties, however…UGH. They do evoke the “goth punk” aesthetic to me…not one I favor.

  6. I actually like them too. I am part of the gothic culture here in Australia, but “goth” isn’t what I thought when I looked at them >.<.
I just thought they were very interesting… Of course, I’d only wear them with something rather simple as they’re pretty statement on their own. Maybe a little black dress?

  7. I am a 55 year old granny, and so-o not goth. But I LOVE these shoes! No way would I spend this kind of money on any shoe, but if I found them in my price range I would definitely have a pair!
