Star Style on Trial: Katie Holmes in pegged jeans

Katie_holmes_pegged_jeans

We have a shocking confession to make. While most of the fashion blogosphere have been rolling their eyes and exclaiming in horror at the sight of Katie Holmes in rolled up jeans that may or may not belong to Tom, we… haven’t.

Don’t get us wrong, it’s not exactly her best look. It’s definitely not a look we’re going to be emulating any time soon, unless, of course, we find ourselves suddenly and dramatically transported back to the early nineties, and even then… no, probably not.

But is it really so bad?

She looks comfortable. She looks casual. And yes, she also looks like she’s wearing her husband’s jeans – which she possibly is – but for some reason we just can’t find it in ourselves to  get worked up about it. Maybe we’re getting more tolerant in our old age or something, but let’s put it this way: we’ve seen worse.

We don’t think we’re going to be placing Katie under Fashion Police arrest for this one. A warning, maybe, but not the full fashion-jail treatment. What do you think, though? Are Katie’s pegged jeans really the fashion crime they’re being made out to be?

Well let’s be honest…she doesn’t look like she stepped right out of the 90’s…her look IS updated for the new millenium…the pants are relaxed, not baggy…and she’s working with the harem pants trend in a far less loathsome way…and yeah, she looks comfortable. Every trend in history is going to show up again…I think it’s right in keeping with the flow of street style that I’ve been seeing. Bohemian, loose, casual, comfortable, slouchy…this look did not surprise me much at all…i saw it with mild amusement :)

  2. Corrinna says:

    I like it..she looks ok

  3. Am says:

Yeah I don’t have a problem with it. It actually looks quite good on her, though, like you, I would recoil from wearing them myself.

  4. Amanda says:

I wonder if we’d be so aghast if these were first seen on Sienna Miller or Misha Barton; we’d probably just roll our eyes at another attempt at “effortless” boho chic.
I find these disappointing on Katie because, otherwise, she’s my favourite celeb, fashion-wise. She pulls off the Jackie-O and the Mary Tyler Moore looks so well, which I love, and then she goes and wears these stumpifying, lumpifying jeans.

  5. Kelly says:

It’s not the idea of pegged jeans that bothers me, it’s the whole package. I think J. Crew shows how to peg their jeans a lot better – the jeans are fitted enough that you don’t look like you stole your pants from a homeless man.
But I have to disagree that she stole Tom’s pants…he’s far too short to have pants that she could actually roll :)

  6. Alexia says:

Kelly, that’s exactly what I was thinking! Tom is shorter that her, so those pants cannot possibly be his.

  7. Arielle says:

I think she manages to find a casual, comfortable look that also looks cute on her. I wouldn’t even give her a warning. I’m guessing this is another of those looks that depends on what woman is wearing it.

  8. Sarah says:

It’s not my favourite look on her, but I am glad that she looks comfortable. I hate watching celebs go out, with kids or without, just for a casual thing, in skin tight jeans and 6 inch heels. Some how, that doesn’t seem comfortable.

  9. Han says:

They seem pretty cute in the picture on the left. Of course, I wasn’t old enough to worry about these pants the first time they came around.

  10. Ash says:

The outfit on the left is actually pretty cute, but the outfit on the right is… not. I think it’s the color of the jeans that sets it off.

  11. heavies says:

i love this look. She carries off very well. :D
something new for me to try out next week

  12. Abby says:

I think she looks rather cute.

  13. kate says:

i’m not so sure, something about the crotch area just makes me feel slightly ill..
i feel quite awkward just looking at it ;) haha

  15. Jazz says:

For walking around the city, this look works. I mean, better to be comfortable in loose jeans and a cute understated sweater than in agony in stilletos and a mini skirt. Besides, I have seen MUCH worse. I think you can skip the warning altogether.

  16. sarah says:

    i like it!

  17. Megan says:

    i love it!
    infact i want some

  18. Jules says:

I think she looks as though she’s channelling pop Asian styles, particularly Japanese. This kind of thing is all over Seattle.

  19. pj says:

I find it very cute on her. she can carry it very well
