It’s no secret that The Fashion Police have a dislike of rubber/plastic shoes that goes slightly beyond rational. Crocs, jelly shoes, you name it – we hate ‘em all, and we’re not willing to make an exception for these gold rubber brogues by Melissa, because … well, because they’re rubber brogues. Gold ones. And we just can’t think of a single occasion on which these would be the preferred choice of footwear. Even Crocs, after all, are acceptable as gardening shoes, or on the feet of people who have no other choice but to wear them, but these? When and why would you ever need a pair of gold rubber brogues, we wonder? Sure, they’d be waterproof in very wet weather, but so would lots of shoes that don’t look like this, no?
In the spirit of full disclosure, we’re going to hold our hands up here and say we don’t particularly like brogues anyway, regardless of what they’re made of. We can find nothing to love about that sensible, lace-up look, so we wouldn’t be rushing to buy these even if they weren’t made of rubber. Given that they are, though, we’re keen to hear what you, our beloved Fashion Jury think. Are these just what you’ve been looking for all your life? Would you wear them? If so, they’re £50 at Browns.

Um, those are man shoes, right? Because they sure look like man shoes…although why any man would want gold rubber shoes is beyond me. Maybe they are intented for a costume party? With really messy floors?
well, I DO like brogues. These are an affront to them. I like brogues made of expensive, tasteful materials…these are just lace up crocs, and they look like a million blisters just waiting to happen. £50? Ridiculous.
Peachfish – nope, they’re definitely for women!
I think they’re hilarious. I’d wear ‘em for sure.
I wouldn´t!!! they´re horrid!!
ahhhh jelly shoes many a fond memory running around on the beach with my sisters… WHEN I WAS 5.
These are just insane. Horrible, horrible, horrible.
And talking of man shoes – when I was a kid my lovely mother used to make me and my sisters wear sensible lace-up shoes – I remember being mortified when I went into the primary school toilets and another girl who could only see my feet said VERY loudly “there’s a BOY in here!” Oh the memories…
They’re kind of awesome. I’d wear them instead of rain boots – or for gardening, if I had a garden… not necessarily anywhere else.
Now I have “Goldfinger” stuck in my head.
If they had them in silver you could wear them as part of a tin man Halloween costume
Wow… all I have to say is this:
Diggiloo Diggiley! Life is going my way
when I’m walking in my golden shoes!
Everything I’ve ever dreamed of
has suddenly come true!
Diggiloo Diggiley! Let this miracle stay-
I will be whatever I will choose.
Please, don’t wake me up! I’m dreaming-
Of me in golden shoes!
(Whoa, the english lyrics to that song… horrible. XD!)
They’ve opened up a Croc store not far from where I go to school.
Someone has already vandalized their sign, writing “CROCS ARE UGLY AND THEY SUCK.”
I can’t understand the appeal of wearing rubber shoes, with the exception of wellies for rainy days/if you’re fishing.
Brogues are ugly as hell in general, and your hatred towards rubber shoes isn’t irrational at all – I have yet to see a pair of rubber shoes that I’ll like. So this combo is just…. “Hideous” doesn’t suffice… They’re somehow insane. Are we sure the designer wasn’t on LSD when he/she thought of this idea??
I love brogues (I really enjoy the androgynous look) but I certainly don’t like gold rubber brogues, because… well, why would anyone?
To quote my boyfriend, to whom I showed these: ‘eye burning’!
Another brogue fan here, but these are creeping me out.
I could imagine these just barely working as part of a fetish-y steampunk outfit. A low-cut, button-up blouse in cream, knee-length ruffled skirt in dark brown, some sort of underbust corset in this same gold material, striped brown/cream stockings, and a top hat and goggles. There’s lots of better choices for shoes for this outfit, but if it came down to these shoes or death, that’s how I’d wear them.
They would make a nice plant pot.
They remind me of the little plastic shoes you used to put on your barbie dolls
I love a brogue done right, which I find hard to find. Melissa also did a black and white colorway which I was excited to see, but then I found out it was rubber?? Not only that but it cost more than some brogues made out of…REAL stuff…This is sold out at browns, too. I can’t believe people want rubber shoes? seems cheap to me (yet..they arn’t cheap!)?
no
no no no …it is a no no…
