I’d like to draw attention to an extract from an article written in 1897 within the New York Times, where a Miss Penrose had the audacity to wear trousers on Coney Island:
”
‘Your Honour,’ said Miss Penrose to Judge Nostrand yesterday morning, ‘my arrest is an outrage. I have a right to wear trousers if I wish.’
The Judge looked at her curiously. ‘Not on this Island,’ said he. ‘It’s against the law, and, at the same time, highly improper. I’ll have to hold you in $200 for frial.’
Robert Burkhardt, a saloon keeper at the island, gave bail for her, and she walked out with a parting injunction from the court to change her attire.
”
This is just one of thousands upon thousands of similar articles stretching through the 19th & 20th centuries. I’ll presume you understand why I have posted this.

OH Am and Arielle (July 29th 2008) how very narrow minded your thoughts are!
Remember trousers were men’s clothing at one time and women stole the idea for themselves. In the same way, tights were once a man’s item of clothing until women stole them aswell.
Not happy with that you now obviously think that men wearing tights is just one big joke. You may indeed not know of any men who would want to wear tights but believe me there are!! It has also been noted that many women do not like wearing tights – well that is fine, but if men want to start wearing then that should also be fine.

Hey why cant we guys wear tights , you girls wear trousers ,men shirts etc, i for one would welcome men to wear tights , and i will wear them too .

People should have the freedom and self-confidence to wear what they want and that should be respected. As long as they’re worn tastefully and for the right reasons (warmth, support, comfort, feel), then guys… pull on your hose! But do shave your legs if wearing sheers! And wear men’s styles – they are abundantly available. No need to borrow from the ladies…

It’s funny to think that people would judge anyone for what they wear. If we all portend to be so shallow, then maybe we should really go “retro” and enforce nudism.
Honestly, sexual roles involve more than fashion, attitude, or even genital assignment. Wear what you want. If you like it, I love it.

I don’t get this at all. For starters why would a man want to wear them, i can’t imagine they would be very comfortable with hairy legs, and second it just doesn’t look good! This is just weird. It takes metrosexuality way to far.

No. No. No. And…no. Unless you are costumed for a stage production, a ren-fest, or halloween. Then it is perfectly acceptable to wear TIGHTS. No mantyhose. Ever. Even if you are metrosexual. No.

Hi,I’am a bloke who wears tights mostly in the winter. I live in the freezing northeast and also work outdoors and it was my wife’s idea to try them as an extra layer. I can’t wear opaques under trousers, they just irritate my crotch area but thin tights I find ok. It doesn’t cross my mind as being weird wearing them this way, they are just an item of clothing. If I was to waltz down the high street with them on and a skirt then yeah, that is warped but not under trousers doing a fine job of keeping me warm.
