Socks with flip flops – the ultimate summer fashion crime?

Socks_with_flip_flops_2_3

We apologize for the picture above, readers. We realise some of you were probably eating when you read this, and we should probably have issued some kind of warning before springing it on you (Warning! Warning! Clear the area! Socks with flips flops incoming! We repeat: socks with flip flops!), but given that it’s summer time, this is probably nothing that you haven’t seen already.

It is, of course, the "socks with flip flops" fashion crime, and of all the things we’ve seen in our work as Enforcers of Fashion, we believe this to be one of the very worse, because not only does it look bad, it also makes us squirm in our chairs at the discomfort of it all.

Now, we don’t recommend the wearing of socks and flip flops together at any time, but if it absolutely must happen, there are special flip flop socks that already have the "cloven hoof" effect built in, as it were.

Have you spotted the dreaded "socks with flip flops" effect, yet? Does it make you cringe as much as it does us?

I only wear socks with tabi (the japanese term for socks made for sandals) when I’m in Japan…their culture thinks of feet like we think of boobs, and covering them means modesty. Other than that, EEW.

  2. Jade says:

I have never understood this – why wear flip-flops, traditionally worn in hot weather to keep one’s feet cool, if you are going to wear heavy tube socks underneath? I first saw this trend in Albany, N.Y., over ten years ago, and it was horrifying. I had forgotten about it until I saw this photo:)

  3. amaris says:

why the shock?! socks in sandals has existed since men invented, well, sandals and socks…

  4. feike says:

Yes, I have seen them. On japanese paintings before 20th century.
    Nowadays… meh.

  5. Angela says:

How about BLACK flip flops with OPAQUE NAVY tights? Not footless tights, REGULAR tights. I believe the woman committing this crime was wearing a red floral print dress as well, but I can’t really be sure because of the flip flop shock. :[

  6. Ben says:

This is a disaster only trumped by socks with Jesus Creepers.

  7. sue says:

That to me speaks middle age man sitting in a deckchair wearing a hankie on his head.

  8. jennifer:) says:

i wear socks and flip flops every single day, and for me it is quite comfortable. not only sock and flip flops, but mismatched socks and flip flops. i love it and i don’t know why you all are so against it.
