tartan House of Holland creates a tartan army. Fashion Police concerned.

As you may or may not know, the Fashion Police HQ is located in the frozen north, aka, Scotland. This means that The Fashion Police have grown up with what may well be an irrational distrust of tartan/plaid. To us, tartan is what the plastic dolls in the tacky tourist shops on the Royal Mile wear. It’s what your mum tries to force you into for your cousin’s wedding. It’s a way for men to wear skirts and flash their privates, in the name of "tradition". It’s not something we have ever worn ourselves.

We are well aware, however, that this is purely our own prejudice*, so we’d like to ask you, our readers: what do you think of tartan? And, more specifically, what do you think of House of Holland’s bid to make it fashionable for next winter? More pics after the jump, to help you make up your mind…

* We’re pretty sure we don’t like the tartan antlers, though…

  1. In Spain, tartan is what students wear if they go to a school that has a uniform policy. We would also use it in a mini-skirt if we want a lolita look. (but not in high waisted like in the photo)

  2. Tartan is without doubt, the Devil’s Work !!
I hate it – and I know exactly why too !! It’s because the colour combinations are so hideously brash – the classic tartans, the Black Watch, the Stuart Tartan ( the red / yellow/ white one, and the rest of the proper ones, were all designed to be seen easily on a battlefield, when one of your men were injured, they could be found and identified easily…
This doesn’t make for a good or desirable Fashion Look !!
Now then, a beautiful heathery plaid in subtle shades of purpley – blues and greens is different…

  3. I love plaid, totally awesome and can be slimming. I was wearing a pair of wide leg plaid trousers yesterday and got several people asking me if I’d lost wait and complimenting them. A couple of people even asked where I got them (Wal Mart Clearance rack the day before (Tuesday) for $7)

  5. I like the brashness of the tartan colors in these peices but the execution is…amateurish. It looks like something you’d see at the beginning of Project Runway…kind of silly and trampy and significantly un-edited. But they didn’t ruin the palette for me, I still think the fabric could work in the hands of a more talented designer.
