Ask the Fashion Police: Do skinny jeans suit everyone?

Skinnyjeans Dear Fashion Police,

I was given some money for Christmas and I want to use it to buy some new jeans. My friend suggested skinny jeans, but I’ve always assumed they were only for skinny people, which I’m definitely not! Can they suit anyone? (I’m a classic pear shape, with short legs, if it helps.) ~ Amanda

Skinny jeans are actually much more versatile than people tend to think, and can be worn by lots of different shapes and sizes – not just skinny people! In answer to your question, though: no, they don’t suit everyone. Like any item of clothing, they’ll be less flattering on some shapes than they will on others (although this has nothing to do with weight), and the only way to find out is to try them on.

If you do decide you want to wear them, my suggestion would be to wear them with long line tops or tunics, wear leg-lengthening heels rather than flats if you’re self-conscious about your legs, and finally: if you’re at all unsure, go for a straight legged style instead – they give a similarly "skinny" silhouette, but are a little more forgiving on the leg!

What does everyone else think? Do skinny jeans suit everyone?

  1. No way. I have big, muscular calves, I’m short (5’4″), I’m curvy, and I have short legs for my height. All skinny jeans do, even WITH heels, is highlight my short legs and wide child-bearing hips.
    Yuck.

  2. I’m slender, but a little pear-shaped with short legs and a long torso. Skinny jeans just make me look even more bottom-heavy, and wearing them with long tunic tops make my legs look even shorter. Wider-legged jeans are better if you have wide hips, because they balance your figure.
I really love the Gap’s Long and Lean jeans.

  3. I think it all depends on the way you wear them. First time I wore skinny jeans, my husband told me that he had never noticed my calves were so small compared to my butt (he’s all about intellect not about fashion or about diplomacy)… but now he likes me better with skinny jeans. Anyway point being, wide legged trousers are much less forgiving especially for short legged people… is this helping anyone?

  4. I’m with AngieArel.
By the way, what brand are the jeans in the pic, that is the exact wash I am looking for…

  5. I don’t think it’s about the skinniness of the person, but more to do with their curviness and height. I base this on the fact I am not thin, though I have a friend who is, we also have the same ‘balance’ of figure; small very defined waists, jumping out to large hips, AND we both look good/bad in the same types of jeans.
Basically I believe: Wide leg jeans look best on long legs (or long-looking legs) I can get away with them if I’m wearing some high heels (boots usually) and tops that stop at the hips.
Skinny jeans give you more hip, If I wear them, they basically make my lower half look like a balloon that’s tied at the ankles. However regardless of size, if you want to create some curves, skinny’s are the way to go.
For bootcuts/flares, or anything that goes in at the knee and then opens out, these are perfect for me because they give my figure balance (an exact hourglass to be precise) However if you have a straighter shape they can make your calves look weird.
    And I’m Done!

  7. I agree that they suit more people than you’d expect, but I can never go down the skinny jeans route. I’m tall, and hourglass-y, but I have the thighs of someone who spent too many years doing ballet, and skiiny jeans are very unflattering for me. A great shame, since I quite like them on other people. I wear wide-legs, which I think you can only pull off if you’re of a certain height.

  8. I’m looking for a nice pair of skinny jeans too! Love the one in the picture, do drop some pointers if you can!…As for whether they suit everyone..they don’t! But like any other cut, the only way to know is to try one on!

  9. Do skinny jeans suit everyone? Absolutely not!
I am thin. But curvey (I have hips). But still thin. Like thin enough to wear the smallest woman’s size in jeans.
But skinny jeans make me look fat. And I’m not the type of person who constantly complains about being fat when in fact, I am not.

  10. As everyone else has said, as a girl with hips I cannot wear skinny jeans. I do love my wide-legged high-waists though! Also, I have just bought some skinny flares and I’m ROCKING them today! :D

  11. by the way… I think dark skinnies are easier to pull off. You can as well buy them in a smaller size (as long as you don’t get the muffin top), because if they’re a little tight everything is kept in it’s rightful place… so tight dark skinnies plus maybe some heels and it’s almost impossible to look bad.

  12. I actually just went out and bought skinny jeans today. I got a lighter wash and a darker pair also. In my opinion, I think that skinny jeans look good on people who are proportioned, and have long “looking” legs. Not everyone can pull them off. But I do agree that a longer tunic or t-shirt does look great with them too. :)

  13. As someone who’s a size 18/20 uk size i can safely say no. I once tried on pair of skinny jeans in dorothy perkins once, dark navy cos I remember someone saying to wear dark jeans if your a larger size. well I looked in the mirror and thought Susan you look bloody terrible.

  14. well I have a pair of skinny jeans and everyone says I look great in them. but I’ve heard that they’re going out. is this true??

  15. Well, I have a black pair of skinny jeans that i’m wearing right now. I weigh 168 lbs, have quite a bit of extra pooch and i think i’m overweight. i’m 5’7″and i have long legs. before my legs and thighs and butt got more toned from my dancing, they looked horrible on me. but i’ve been ballroom dancing more than last year and my leg muscles are more toned, even though i still hate them. anyway, now i think they look great on me. so i guess it really does depend on your legs, not your weight.

  16. I am a huge fan of skinny jeans. I have more of a boy shaped body, straight down, no hips, but I have seen them on my sister and she still looks great in them. I do prefer them with heels, but have worn flats as well. If you want a great fitting brand… I love Miss Sixty, very flattering brand and Chip & Pepper (go one size up with C&P because their skinnies are very snug).

    hi mona,

i’m just under 5 ft 3 inches and i weigh 51-52kg. i have shorter legs in proportion to my body, heavy hips and thighs with big knees to boot! i’ve found that bootcut jeans (especially those with a wider hem opening – ie. around 20″) and flared jeans that fit slightly closer around the thighs and knees work best. they balance out heavier hips and lengthen legs very successfully. also, try darker, slightly distressed washes, as they’re more slimming. not too dark though – i find that very dark colours sometimes emphasise the problem, as they make your silhouette stand out more. of course, if you have shorter legs like me, it’s best to wear your jeans with heels. i like 2-3 inch heels best with my jeans, as they’re both flattering and comfortable. i hope this helps!

    • That is so very true about the hue of jeans being too dark! That’s funny you said that because I’ve been trying to tell my friends that for years. The super dark color, I think, makes people look like encased sausages. Ha Ha. I am currently 145 and 5′ 7 and really mad at myself for gaining 20 lbs. I have gone from a 0 to 3 to a size 7. UHG! I find the distressed jeans way more flattering also. I’m thinking that it diverts attention away from the problem areas. I like Seven jeans, Rock and Republic, and Skinny with a kick by American Eagle when i’m chunkier, like now! Also, People should really try Junior sizes instead of Misses. They are truely more flattering. Unfortunately, a Junior seven is about a 4 in misses. They do run smaller than misses. The misses jeans seam to have such a long stride, even the mid rises.

  20. hey, m a very skinny gal, and i tink that wearing a skinny jeans will make me look more skinny. so m wondering, what kind of gean should i wear

  21. I am 5″1′, and 115 lbs. I can really rock a pair of skinny jeans! I have pretty short legs, in proportion to the rest of my body. And thunder thighs! But I have little calves and thin ankles. They just work for me.

  22. Hi all,

I’ve been searching for an answer to my petty problems with skinny jeans, hopefully someone can help. I’m 5’4″ and 130lbs…I guess you could say I have an hour glass shape, but am more “top heavy.” Love skinny jeans on others, but on me…that’s a different story. Whenever I try my size on (size 3) it feels like they are pretty snug around my knees and just look very awkward. I’ve even tried moving up a size to see if that would work, and it fits my knees…but is baggy everywhere else. Is there a fix for this/a type of skinny jeans that might do the trick? Help please!

  23. I REALLY CAN”T WAIT for the skinny jeans fad to go away!!!!! It’s horrible for us women with hips & thin ankles!!! I went through this once in the 60″s. & again in the 80′s!!!WHY< WHY < WHY did they have to come back? I swear this was some gay guy intern at a high fashion designers studio's (who knows NOTHING about the average woman's body) joke on all us women!!! They're probably sitting at Starbucks right now laughing at how they managed to bring back the skinny jeans & how ridiculous we women look in them!!! Myabe the thin girls (the young ones) can pull it off, but the average woman looks horrible in these!!! I recently discovered last years trend of the skinny flare & they definitely make the wide hip girls look more balanced (But they are hard to find online.) My fav will always be an extra low rise flared leg. I'm boycotting skinny jeans!!! Especially those horrid neon colored ones!!!YUCH!!!!
