Men? Are you paying attention at the back there? This winter you’re going to be getting in touch with your feminine side, OK? You will wear skirts – little, kicky ones that flip up at the back when you walk. (You’ll get to wear shiny trousers over them, though, so don’t worry too much about this development. Yet.) You will carry clutch bags. You will wear little midriff-bearing halter tops. Perhaps most worryingly of all, you will wear trousers that sit on the hips with underpants that come all the way up to the waist. Or you will if Prada’s Fall/Winter 08 -09 collection is anything to go by. Are you scared?

When I really think about this, mind you, I can’t think of a single argument why men shouldn’t wear skirts and crop tops, or carry handbags. Women wear pants and suits, and all kinds of other items that are typically "masculine", after all, so maybe Prada is just trying to redress the balance here, and give poor old men the opportunity to expand their wardrobes. Maybe it just looks odd because we’re not used to it. Maybe it’s just my own prejudice that makes me want to wet myself with laughter when I try to imagine any of the men I know wearing any of these clothes?

What do you think of Prada’s menswear collection – and the concept of men dressing in a "feminine" fashion in general?

  1. Oh no! Those poor male models. I don’t know if it’s just my imagination, but they look tortured, a pained expression in their eyes, don’t you think?

  2. I’d like to see some of this sans the sheen. I’ve never been one to admire a lot of metallics. But I don’t see why not. If you consider what men were wearing in the 17th century, these clothes are positively burly. So…I don’t like THIS look, but I actually like the direction.

  3. For Shame you guys! Anybody should be able to wear anything they want to, if this wasnt true we would still be in corsets and the other horrors.I think its absolutely great. Breaking the stereotypes!

  4. You forgot to mention the pretty hairclips! They look like the ones you put on babies – you know when babies haven’t really got enough hair for a style, so you just clip the front bit back to look pretty…

  5. Remember the look on “The Red Haired One” from Shopbop? These guys look just as disgusted. (and with a bit more reason) What in the name of all? Imagine the ‘wedgie’ the guy with the big thong has…
Men will be lining up to get this stuff!

  6. the prob is NOT abt “male wearing female outfits” kind of things.
in many traditions, males wear skirts/dresses, e.g. Scottish.
in fashion world, Jean-Paul Gaultier made skirts for men.
breaking the gender binary n sterotypes?
NO NO NO. our focus should be on the clothes FIRST.
well, these clothes r just too painful to look at, not to say wear in.
no one (male/female/transgender/any sex/any gender) can act. carry them well. period.

  7. According to Guy Trebay, “Ms. Prada quipped that the collection was revenge on men for the social and sartorial contortions they impose on women.”
Alot of the guys I shoot on the street wear women’s items well, so I’m all for genderless beauty. The tutu is a bit of a strech though.

  8. The thing isn’t that their men, the thing is that i don’t think i would want to see a woman in these clothes either. I wouldn’t want a wedgie with my underwear stretch up past my waist line. Nor would i want to wear a little black skirt with super shinny pants.

  9. I think they would be great waiters outfits. They would be fun to ware! The halter top with the skirt and boots with heels would turn heads. I would love an outfit like that.

  10. that is the ugliest an weirdest fashion i have ever seen shame on myself for even coming across this horrible sight
