Style on Trial: Lace-Trim Leggings

Lacetrimleggings After a bit of a shaky start, The Fashion Police have learned to love like leggings. Not quite as much as Lindsay Lohan loves them, of course, but we will acknowledge that leggings have their place. For us, that place is hidden under boots, rather than being used to flaunt a nasty case of camel toe, but the point is: in the right hands, and with the right outfit, we don’t mind leggings.

What we just can’t seem to come to terms with, however, is the lace trim versions, especially when worn, as in this photo from Urban Outfitters, with a tiny denim mini-skirt and white high-top sneakers. Oh, and when they’re fluorescent yellow.

Urban Outfitters? The Eighties called. They’d like their look back. Unless, of course, our loyal readers disagree, and want to defend the lace-trim leggings?

Well, I’m invited to that “bright colours” party and I’d say there just perfect for there but in any other occasion NO WAY! At least not in this colour (and together with trainers)… they could look okay in let’s say a nice cream white combined with a dress (but that would be just an exception and it really is depending on the dress)

  • I prefer my leggings tucked into boots, too, but I don’t have anything against lace-trim leggings specifically. Some people look cute in them with ballet flats and a mini-dress. I don’t, though.
However, I must say that color is awful and I’m not sold on wearing them with sneakers.

These were all the rage when I was in third grade.
    Ugly then. Ugly now.

I think the fluorescent color is a bit much, but these leggings in say, a Black? With Ballet Flats could be cute, definitely not with a sneaker though. A white sneaker at that. Now that I think about it, not with the jean skirt either. This whole look is just terrible.

Leggings are BIG in Australia (as in popularity, not size) and they go quite nicely with a mini-dress. Not sure about florescent colours (not generally a fan) but those on black or a similarly neutral colour could be quite good.

those same ones in black or a dark grey would work…paired with dark wash jeans skirt or say long grey sweater top?

Without even seeing the rest of the model, I automatically get the impression she has a coldsore and smells of stale piss. Thus us the power of those leggings.

I’m slowly coming round the the whole legging thing, these however would look adorable on my 12 year old girl and horribly childish on us grown ups!

well, i haven’t worn any kind of leggings since school. these? might be cute in black, with a denim skirt and a lot of punky accessories. and a pair of bright stiletto pumps.

Black leggings with a nice skirt/tunic and shoes/boots are very chic. Ugly colors, ugly ragged denim skirts, and exposed buns are … UGLY. It amazes me that, done right, leggings can be so great, and done wrong, they are so terrible, and that so many choose the latter.

If the leggings were black and were paired with some cute black ballet flats they could make a hot look!

I’ve hated this leggings + skirt (especially denim mini skirts) for the longest. Over time, I’ve eased up on them. I’m still not legging-crazy. First of all, the look in this post is a fail. Leggings + Converse-like sneakers usually equal fail regardless. There is one look I love with lace-trim leggings: pairing a tunic or shirtdress with [black] lace-trim leggings + some black platform pumps with a chunky heel.
Most other looks with the skirt + leggings usually equal fail, especially with any shoes that aren’t ballet flats or pumps (Converses, flip-flops/thongs, open-toe ankle boots, etc.).

These are very “pre-teen” to me. That means, they’re ok if you’re in elementary school, and not ok if you’re not!
I don’t know if you guys realize how awfully unflattering these are on petite girls! They make your legs look fat and stubby.
I’ll stick to all-over lace leggings thanks!
