Style on Trial: Unitards

unitard Style on Trial: Unitards

We suspect (hope?) we already know the answer to this one, but you told us we got it very wrong about those Reebok Freestyles we featured earlier this month, and The Fashion Police aren’t ashamed to admit it when they’re wrong, so in order to test that our Fashion Radar is still working properly, we’d like to know what you think about unitards in general, and, indeed, this unitard in particular, which we found on the ASOS website this morning, selling for £18, and apparently "in the style of Pixie Geldof".

Our first thought here was "camel toe!" Because if anything’s going to give you a full-on camel toe, we’re thinking a skin-tight unitard would be it. Our second thought was, "God, that’s a bad picture of Pixie Geldof that they’re using to sell this thing", but I guess that’s neither here nor there. And our third? Well, our third thought was simply that it would take a very brave woman, with a whole lot of confidence to go out in public wearing one of these.

To the question on hand, then: what do you think of unitards? Crime of Fashion or totally hawt?

  1. NOT a crime. I wish I had a hundred unitards. I think wearing them in a strictly serious “i’m trying to be sexy” way is probably a crime, but I think they’re pretty fun. I used to run around school in a unitard and big t-shirt.
Then again I took about 12 drama classes a day, so it was pretty convenient…

  2. I once saw a 5 foot tall, 400 lb woman wearing a santa unitard at a mall.
    I don’t remember what it’s like to see anymore…

  3. CRIME
Just the thought of bending over in one of those makes my eyes pop! Talk about a wedgie!! At least camel toes aren’t painful (except to the onlooker).

  4. C-R-I-M-E! I would fall out of my chair if I ever saw someone actually wear this in public. I don’t think I would bother to keep my whispers and strange looks to myself, either. Nothing that has “tard” at the end of it should ever find itself in anyones wardrobe. Ever.

  5. i think it looks fab and its now in stock on asos and i have purchased one. a size 8 might i add. the fact they go up to v v large sizes in this is scary though!! if ya got it, FLAUNT IT!!

  6. i do ice skating and i wear unitards so i know that a camel-toe is not an issue with them its more of an issue with leotards because they ride up. But also, mine aren’t some hideous electric blue spandex thing that alot of skaters would wear i design and make them.
If you have got a killer bod then yeah you can go for it any lumps or bulges then NO-WAY i train like 20 hours a week deadly serious so i can get away with it + ive got really long legs.

  7. Ladies, of course I don’t expect my female collegues to show up in a unitard at work. But for a party for example this is awesome. But without wanting to be descriminating, I think they should not be sold over size 8. And there are probably more wrong cut stretchpants forcing a cameltoe than a proper unitard!

  8. Unitards are hot. When I was little and taking dance classes I remember having to wear one for a recial one time. I loved it so much that my mom couldn’t get it off me. That was in the 80′s, so I always wore it with oversized, torn sweatshirts.
These days I spend so much time working out that spandex tops and shorts or leggings are a regular part of my wardrobe. Unitards just mean that the tank and leggings are connected.
Recently I was visiting family out of state and I stopped at a mall while I was there. I found a black unitard in a department store and though it would make a great halloween costume. I hadn’t worn one in years, but tried it on and thought it looked great on me, so I bought it. The next day I had a four drive back home and decided that it the most comfortable thing I had to wear. It felt great on me and I loved the looks I got when I stopped at a rest area.
With the 80′s look back again, I think I could be buying more of these things in the near future.

  9. If every woman on the planet wore nothing but unitards, I would not complain one bit.
Honestly, the only people pressuring women NOT to wear form fitting fashions like this, are other women.

  10. The English excuse me I’m Colombian and I speak in Spanish to my fashion of leotards and Unitards be returning, hopefully many groups on facebook and YahooGroups as well as models and websites want to reimpose the fashion of the leotards of the 80′s I am convinced that we will impose and the opponents of this sensual garment, which should never pass out of fashion.

  12. She looks cute, I’m wondering if ASOS has other different colors in stock? This one would go great with a leather jacket.

  13. Leggings and unitards are great. Obviously, as with every style, certain body types are not flattered. As others have said, if you’ve got it, flaunt it. Nothing exudes movie star glamor more than spandex in a classy outfit. The grunge look (torn, baggy, or ragged) accessories do not compliment the sleek look of spandex. Wearing just a unitard is a bold and beautiful look for those with great bods; the rest of us unfortunates need to be content covering just a little. Unitards (especially with sleeves) could also be used under a tank or dress.
