Fashion Rules on Trial: Double Denim

Doubledenim A few weeks ago, I threw a jacket on to pop round to visit family. It was only when I arrived that I realised the horrible truth: the jacket was a denim one… and I was wearing black skinny jeans with it. Yes, I had committed the ultimate fashion crime – double denim. And even although the jeans were black, and could easily have passed for trousers, I couldn’t get that jacket off quick enough. I felt like I was auditioning for Status Quo and, needless to say, I kept the jacket in my bag for the car ride home.

I had never worn double denim since I was a child in the eighties (and in those days it was acid-wash denim, just to make matters worse), and I swear to you all now that, as God is my witness, I will never do it again.

What about you, though? Would you ever wear double denim? Do you think it’s really all that bad?

Ohhh, the double-denim faux-pas. I have done it, in my early teenage years, but I’m not proud. I couldn’t do it now, though. Your situation doesn’t sound that bad – the black skinnies can be forgiven – what really struck me was – a denim jacket? They still exist?
On a related note, a girl in one of my classes wears jeans with a *calf-length denim trench coat*. Yes, you heard me. Truly saddening.

Beth- I know, I know. In my defence, it’s a kind of tuxedo shaped dark denim, not a pale, puffy one, and I bought it in Zara a moment of desparation, when I was on holiday in the Canary Islands – I’d packed for hot weather but it was permanently freezing! I actually think they can look OK in the spring/summer, over summery dresses.

Double denim is okay. It’s the cut and overall shape of the denim that matters. Tailored denim jackets of dark color with jeans of the same color can be paired reasonably with cowboy boots or heels. The primary trouble with denim is that is often hides a person’s shape and is too bulky to work with. It also has its place. Double denim on a ranch or at the play ground is reasonable. Just my modest opinion… I’m no fashionista

Double denim is not big deal. The Canadian tuxedo look with the blue denim? Not so much, but black jeans with a blue denim jacket is cute, and what’s even cuter is black jeans with a white denim jacket.

I actually did double denim last night. It was kind of weird. I mean, I instinctively knew it was wrong, but I honestly had never really thought it through. I ignored the feeling of wrongness and left the house. When the sweet, doddering old security guard at my workplace mistook my outfit for a track suit, I recognized my error.
Please fashion police — it was a first offense and I’ll never do it again! Let me off this time with a warning?

    Double denim is very redneck.

There has been one time when i wore double denim and I felt like it worked. but it was the only time. The jeans and jacket were both dark denim, and the jacket was slim and cropped so it didn’t overbear the shirt i was wearing under it. but here in the western area of U.S. people wear denim jackets a lot! Sometimes, it gets a little annoying…

I use to wear jeans and denim jacket in the 80′s and 90′s but not now, it’s not a good look.

  10. jenna says:

I thought double denim meant blue denim jacket and blue denim jeans (like what Davina wore one evening on 2008 Big Brother), surely blue denim jacket and black jeans are OK ?!

I can’t belive you are dissing double denim.
I have just committed to wearing denim for a year: A top, a bottom and anaccessory. So every day I am committing TRIPLE denim fashion trauma.

I have a denim jacket, given to me as a present, which I’d never worn as I rarely emerge from jeans. Last night, though, I wore a dress, and I was cold, so I thought… why not? It’s nicely fitted, and it didn’t hide my figure, so it actually looked quite nice.

I’m fairly open to the double denim experience, I’m not even ashamed to say it. Obviously there are some limitations but as a general rule i’m currently into it.
So much so, I plan to test the waters with a pair of high waisted denim shorts with a rather lovely faded Topshop denim shirt this coming weekend. To break up the denim overload I do intend of throwing in a little faux leather biker styled jacket. Should I be pelted with tomatoes from the fashion police, I shall inform you all. .
