On Trial: Leggings – love them or hate them?

Leggings

OK. The debate on leggings has been raging for a couple of years now, with some people loving them and some people hating them, so I’m putting them up On Trial so that we can get a definitive answer. What do you think of leggings? Do you wear them? Would you wear them? Or do you think they should be consigned to fashion hell, forever.

For myself, I’m on the fence on this one. I hated leggings unreservedly when they first started to make their comeback a couple of years ago. Last winter, though, I tentatively tried on a pair with a sweater dress and boots. To my surprise, I loved them. They were much more comfortable (not to mention warmer) than tights, but as long as I always wore them with boots, no one could tell the difference. And there’s the rub. I will only wear my leggings with boots, when they look just like tights. While I think they can look good – on some people – with shoes, I just can’t seem to bring myself to do it. So tell me: can you? Tell me what you think of leggings by voting in the poll you’ll find after the jump…

I like leggings, with a very short dress or very long shirt/sweater. I have the same feeling about wearing them with anything but boots though, its just not for me. I know girls in New York who wear leggings as if they were pants and that I think is just too far.

I wore leggings this weekend for the first time in 15 years (used to be my fashion staple at age 15 with Doc Martens, grandad shirt and waistcoat!!!)
I only wore them because i was at a music festival and it was very muddy and it was the only pair of trousers that wouldn’t drag on the ground! Did a bit of a KT Tunstall and wore shorts over the top.

I like leggings when they aren’t at your ankle. With a really long sweater… it’s ok.
Or a mini dress that you want to make look more formal for school without looking to out there.
But, for me I’d prefer some dark skinny jeans.

Love them and wear them regularly. Perfect for adding a little interest to an outfit.

Weeellll…. I never had to live through the horror of leggings in the 80s, so perhaps I am a little ignorant of other people’s vehement reactions to them. Anyway, I don’t have too big of a problem with full-length leggings. I think they’re a nice way to keep warm when you want to wear skirts or dresses in cold weather, and in rich solid colors or interesting prints can look pretty good. The only reason I don’t wear them is that I don’t like the skin that shows between the bottom of the tights and my shoes, so I prefer tights or socks to stay warm. The only leggings I can’t STAND are the capri-length ones which cut your legs off at a weird spot.

i’m basically in love with tights because i’m a runner and we wear spandex all the time anyway! i hate it when the tights come down to your ankle though, the knee length ones are good though.

    Knee-length leggings???
I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be confrontational, but I really can’t imagine that looks, shall we say…”fashionable”.
Definitely a gym/going running look ONLY.

i’m not a fan. the main reason i have been in love with wearing tights for years is that they relieve my feet from the horrible blisters i get from ALL of my shoes. tights that don’t cover the feet seem so pointless to me. and i don’t like how girls who know that they don’t have the legs for a miniskirt think leggings solve the problem. adding another horizontal line is only gonna make them look fatter.

Well if under boots then I think they’re fine, but if you’re going to wear them without boots? they can’t be full length, they have to be between knee length and capri length. They have to have some sort of decoration, like lace, or buttons running down the side. But that’s just me. I wear a grey pair with oversized buttons down the side with heels, short skirt and go salsa dancing.

  15. RSM says:

Leggings are the comfortable choice for all and leggings as pants are just fine. Abandon the body image constraints and just wear them. Go for the comfort and support. Choose a well made pair – not the ones made with cotton fiber. Cotton will bag out over time and that is the real reason the cheap cotton leggings were stopped being worn by the masses in years past. The fit is right when the fit is tight. Full length leggings that reach the ankle have a greater positive visual aesthetic than the capri style that chop the leg. The longer leggings also support you from your ankles to the waist with an energetic lift.

  16. Dave says:

Leggings are the sexiest thing on earth.
