Crime of Fashion – split toe socks

splittoesocks Crime of Fashion split toe socksIf there’s one fashion "law" that we at The Fashion Police believe in almost more than any other, it’s that socks with sandals are all kinds of wrong. The only thing worse than socks with sandals, in fact, would be socks with flip flops, but no one would be stupid enough to try that now, would they?

Oh no, wait. They would. These are split-toe socks, you see. They’re designed especially for people who want to wear flip flops with their socks underneath – mad people, in other words. Big in Japan, but will they take off in the West, we wonder?

  1. As much as I agree that I would NEVER wear those, the fact that they’re popular in Japan deserves a bit of defense…they call them tabi, and they’ve been around for a LONG time. Their culture states that feet are VERY erotic, so to them, sandals without shoes is kind of like a sheer top with no bra. So in a way, it kinda makes sense?

  2. Just reinforcing the point Cadi already made: in Japan, wooden geta sandals are practically never worn without tabi socks. Tabi are also worn as a part of traditional costumes such as a full kimono outfit. They’ve been around for ages – wearing them is not a question of a passing fashion fad.

  3. M – these were found on a UK website, where there is no tradition of wearing geta sadals or, indeed, these kind of socks. The fact that people in Japan wear them for tradutional reasons doesn’t mean we automatically have to find them attractive.

  4. I really don’t see the big deal. So what, if someone wears socks with flip-flops. Sometimes it just makes life a bit easier to be able to wear flip-flops and at the same time wear socks. When I travel by plane, train, or bus, I wear the combination.

Of course, what do I know about fashion?
    .-= JT´s last blog ..Monkeys: Maelong =-.

  5. I wear these socks every day and I love them. I can take off my sneakers at the door and change right in to my house flip flops without taking my socks off. What makes me shudder is the thought of wearing the 3 or 4 inch heels so proudly worn by so many women who are ruining their backs and feet by wearing them. So, I’m going it alone in my tabi socks. They’ve been around for centuries; they’ve been tested by time. They do no harm.

  6. These are perfect for me. I work at a backpacking camp that does not allow people wearing sandals on base without socks, (for health/safety reasons). I have a pair of chaco Z2s with a toe strap, and there’s no way I’m going an entire spring/summer without them!

  7. They’re actually part of the traditional costume. ^^” Wooden split-toe sandals and split-toe socks, I mean.

    And, anyway, they’re rather cute.

  8. Ha! Well my mother always said socks with flats was cheap floozie-ville. But am here to tell you that tabi socks with a thong sandal are incredibly comfortable transitioning from summer through fall, and I really don’t care whether other people think it’s cool. What I really want to know is where to buy the toe socks in the higher cut and fun colors you posted in this “horrors” commentary … LOL ;)
