Actually, I thought the very same as you till just a few days ago. I happen to go to edressme.com from time to time, and stumbled upon this use of the mysterious tie up socks.
http://www.edressme.com/socksmn0401.html
Kinda cool if you ask me, and certainly not something I would have thought about.
Tell me what you think.

I'd actually think they're kind of cute if they were thick cotton and padded on the bottom. I LOVE slipper socks. They're awesome for around the house and more comfortable than actual slippers.
Sadly, they're not, so I have to agree with your verdict.

the idea definitely comes from Japan
Japanese learn from the cultures of other countries
after all these yrs, they combine n' develop their own style n' fashion
they've got many different styles (can be very exaggerated)
still they accept n' respect others' choices
these "footie socks" may represent the fashion of Japan
i mean, they're willing to try on new things n' not afraid to be themselves
everyone has an unique style tho some may find it strange
i'm not going to discuss whether Japanese hv good taste or bad taste, hv taste or no taste -
but i appreciate their excessive interest in clothes n' creativity in styling
well these socks may look more "reasonable" when they appear in a total look
but most likely u'll send it straight to fashion hell
u knw being good taste every day can be very boring
so why don't we look from another angle?
at least we can get a laugh
here is a website abt Tokyo street fashion
http://www.style-arena.jp/index_e.htm
the styles in those snapshots r not very extreme
they're wht normal Japanese wear daily
