We all know that bad fashion can be hazardous to the health of those who have to look at it (or to their eyesight at least), but according to reports in the media today, even good fashion can hurt us. This is a serious subject now, folks, so listen up…
Stiletto heels? Can totally hurt your feet. I know! Who knew! The pointy-toed ones are particularly bad, say orthopaedic surgeons, because they make your feet “wobble” and can affect your “biomechanics”, whatever they are. In time you’ll become totally deformed, unable to walk properly or wear anything other than stilettos because your legs will become so accustomed to the extra height that your tendons will shorten, meaning that you’ll have to walk in tiptoes for the rest of your life. This will suck, and it will suck bad. Trust me.
Think ballet flats are the answer? Think again! They put too much strain on the back and don’t give proper suppor to the feet. Ditto flip-flops. So, in the future? Looks like we’ll all be wearing Crocs, folks. Don’t shoot the messenger. And it gets worse. Yes, you can also damage yourself by wearing thongs, big necklaces and dandly earrings. Look after the jump to find out how.
How your clothes can hurt you, by orthopeadic surgeons:
1. Giant handbags
Cause muscular strain in the neck, shoulders and upper back regions. Are likened by some to “taking part in an endurance sport”.
2. Big earrings
= torn earlobes, natch.
3. Heavy necklaces
Muscle strain in the neck and shoulders, headaches.
“Thong underwear comes (in direct contact) with the crease of the buttocks, and for those women who wear very tight-fitting thongs, it can promote bacterial vaginitis and urinary tract infections,” says Dr. Shira Varon, a UCSD obstetrician-gynecologist. Thong panties can also cause chafing and lacerations on the anal area, causing infection.”
Poor posture and misalignment of the spine
