On Trial: Maxi Dresses

Maxidresses

So, maxi dresses – what do you make of them? For me personally, these are to be avoided at all costs – not because there’s anything wrong with them, pe se, but because, as a bit of a short-ass, anything longer than knee-length totally drowns me. The dress on the left of this picture, with all of that billowing material, for instance, would leave me looking like nobody’s child, and while I love the print on the purple one second from the right, it would probably drag along the ground behind me, leaving me looking like an extra from some weird costume drama. So, for me, I feel like fashion has gone out of the frying pan and right into the fire, with the move from unflattering tunics to – in my case – equally unflattering maxis.

But that’s just me. I know lots of women are big fans of the big dresses – are you?
(Oh, and if you are, you’ll find all of the ones pictures at Dorothy Perkins)

    Not a fan…being 5ft 4 I think they’d drown me…

  2. Icy says:

I love them, but not the sort pictured here. They need to be sleek and long, not gathered.

I’m pretty tall (5′7-5′8), so SOME maxi dresses are all right. You still have to look for a litle bit of tailoring that separates *dress* from muu-muu/nightgown. From all of the dresses featured above, the ONLY one I would wear and frankly, really like, is the 2nd one from the left. It’s the discreet draping detail @ the bustline. I would freaking *rock* THAT dress. The other ones, I wouldn’t even take a siesta in them…

  4. Susan says:

Holy crap! At 5′1 with a 27 in. inseam, it would be dragging on the floor for me for miles! Not a fan, for me personally, anyways.

I’m 5′10 and I LOVE the maxi dress, but even I have to watch what style I buy. Too much fabric on the bottom can swamp even me. You also have to watch accessories. I saw someone wearing one a couple weeks ago and she had big chunky enamal necklaces with big chunky bracelets, combine that with the excess fabric on the bottom she was a walking bulk of fabric and enamel. Terrible.
